Pingelshagen combines a village history shaped by agriculture over many centuries with an art programme and surroundings rich in woods and fields. Its history goes back to the establishment of the place name in the first half of the 15th century; for exploring the area, there is both a specific cycling connection and regional opportunities to get around on foot, by bike and on horseback. This lets you decide whether local history and art or the landscape should take centre stage when planning your trip.

Local History and Art

The name Pingelshagen became established in the first half of the 15th century. Agriculture shaped village life for many centuries. The two time references highlight different aspects: the first concerns the establishment of the name, while the second refers to the long-lasting influence of agriculture on village life. Since 2006, Kreidekreis Pingelshagen has taken part in the KUNST OFFEN art programme with group exhibitions. Alongside the historical perspective, this offers a distinct cultural theme.

Sylvia Ludwig’s workshop-gallery in Pingelshagen has also hosted a group exhibition featuring four artists. If you want to visit a specific exhibition, check the dates and access arrangements in advance; both may change.

Woods, Fields and Lake Landscape

Pingelshagen directly borders the northwestern edge of Schwerin and is surrounded by woods and fields. The area around Pingelshagen is close to Lake Schwerin and is considered a lake landscape. Woods and fields refer to the immediate surroundings, while the lake-landscape classification refers to the wider area. These different scales help distinguish the local landscape from its broader setting.

Cycling and Other Activities

The region around Pingelshagen offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and horse riding. A specific cycling connection runs from Pingelshagen to Klein Trebbow; the cycle route was officially opened on 30 June 2023. This distinction is useful when planning a day out: hiking and horse riding are regional options, while cycling also offers a named connection between two places.

Northwest Mecklenburg in Its Broader Landscape Setting

In the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the northern part encompasses the landscape area “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” while the south belongs to the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal sections, glacial meltwater and drainage channels, and sandur plains shape the district’s landscape. This broad-scale context complements the view of Pingelshagen, the village surrounded by woods and fields.

The district’s cultural and protected landscapes also offer a variety of themes. Gadebusch Castle is a Renaissance castle dating from 1573 in the town of Gadebusch. It is considered a rare example of Mecklenburgian or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance architecture and features reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style. The “Radegast Valley” landscape conservation area covers about 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. It includes the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, woodland and wet woodland. Thus, in addition to its lakes and coastal landscapes, Northwest Mecklenburg also offers distinctive architectural and nature-conservation themes.
