A trip to Schildetal can be shaped around architectural history, parkland and village culture. Badow offers especially vivid themes: the manor house, chapel, historic carriages and diverse parkland appeal to a range of interests. Architectural layers from different periods, carefully cultivated vegetation and recurring cultural events all come together here.

Badow: Architecture and Parkland

Badow was first documented in 1230. The present-day Badow Manor House was built in 1906 in a Neo-Baroque style, based on plans by architect Paul Korff and atop 17th-century vaulted cellars. The manor house therefore brings together a more recent building phase and older vaults; Badow’s first documented mention dates back even further. These dates tell different parts of the village’s and building’s history, rather than suggesting a single construction date for everything.

Badow Chapel dates from 1847. Its three eight-part vaults have an English Gothic character, offering a different architectural accent from the manor house’s Neo-Baroque style. Visits to the chapel can be arranged by appointment through the Döbbersen parish office. Confirm your visit in advance, as the visiting arrangements may change.

The manor house park features avenues of linden and chestnut trees, old oaks, monumental yews, rhododendrons and a red-leaved pedunculate oak. The avenues give the grounds a different structure from the individual trees and shrubs; it is precisely this mix that makes the park a varied garden destination. Badow also lies on the edge of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, adding a landscape connection that complements its architectural and garden themes.

Village Culture and Possible Experiences

Recurring cultural events are held in Schildetal, including an annual village festival. Dates and programmes may change, so check what is planned for your chosen travel dates before setting off. This is a useful basis for planning if your visit is timed around a specific event.

In Badow, horse-drawn carriage rides through the surrounding meadows and forests can be requested. If you would like to include this option in your plans, enquire in advance. Badow Manor House also has a collection of historic carriages. The collection and the possible ride offer different points of interest: historic vehicles on the one hand, and an experience in the countryside that can be arranged on the other. A small private herd of horses also lives in Badow.

Cycling Route and Choosing Accommodation

The regional R9 cycle route connects Schwerin and Zarrentin over 47 kilometres, with Schildetal named as one of the places along the route. If the R9 is relevant to your travel plans, check the current route, as route details may be revised.

Badow Manor House offers holiday apartments. This lets you focus your further research on your interests while keeping the different visiting arrangements in mind.

Nordwestmecklenburg in a Broader Context

The wider travel destination of Nordwestmecklenburg also encompasses a variety of landscapes. The “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” lie in the north, while the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” is in the south. Terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the district’s landscape.

Regional cultural and landscape highlights in Nordwestmecklenburg include Gadebusch Castle, a Renaissance castle dating from 1573 in Gadebusch. With its reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style, it is a rare example of Mecklenburgian, or North German, Brick Gothic architecture. The Radegast Valley Landscape Conservation Area covers around 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. It includes the Radegast’s highly meandering, near-natural course, as well as adjoining grassland, reed beds, trees and scrub, and swamp forests.
