Discover Wedendorfersee: lake, reeds and history
Accommodation in Wedendorfersee
Wedendorfersee is shaped by its lake and an open, hilly landscape. A nearly continuous belt of reeds runs along the natural shoreline; extensive rolling pastures and fields also define the scenery. Historic landmarks add another dimension: the village church in Kirch Grambow and Wedendorf Castle. This gives you two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: nature and architectural history. You can focus on the lake and its paths, or give greater weight to the historic sights.
Lakeshore and open countryside
Lake Wedendorfer See is part of the “Köchelsdorfer Mühle einschließlich Wedendorfer See” landscape conservation area and covers about 24 hectares. Its natural shoreline features a nearly continuous belt of reeds. Extensive rolling pastures and fields also shape the landscape. The lakeshore and open agricultural land thus offer contrasting features. The lake provides a clear focal point, while the pastures and fields draw the eye across the rolling countryside.
Hiking: around the lake or on a short detour
A hiking trail funded by LEADER makes a circuit around Lake Wedendorfer See. A trail to the lake is also signposted behind the village church in Kirch Grambow, offering the option of a short detour. The difference between the routes is clear: on one, the lake sets the course of the hike; on the other, it is the destination of a short detour from the church. You can decide whether the lake should shape your hike or serve as an addition to a visit to Kirch Grambow.
The church and castle as historic sights
Kirch Grambow is part of the municipality of Wedendorfersee and lies on the eastern shore of Lake Wedendorfer See. The village church was built in 1267. Inside is a Baroque altar with elaborate carvings, which was brought to the church in 1691. To arrange a guided tour of the church, you can contact Pastor Ortlieb at 038872 / 51 013. Wedendorf Castle offers a different historical perspective: it was built in 1697, is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The two sights therefore differ in how visitors can see them.
Northwest Mecklenburg in the wider region
Within the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” lies to the north, while “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” lies to the south. Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the district’s landscape. This wider perspective adds further landscape forms to the distinctive combination of lake and rolling countryside at Wedendorfersee. The district’s architectural history offers another point of interest: Gadebusch Castle in Gadebusch was built in 1573 and is a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance architecture. Reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style are among its features.
