In Roduchelstorf, an exceptionally old house, traces of different eras and documented cycling routes come together. This gives you several starting points for planning your trip: you can explore the history of the villages, take in the landscape with its historic boundaries, or discover Roduchelstorf along a cycling tour.

The Kossätenhaus dating from 1616

The municipality highlights the Kossätenhaus, dating from 1616, as its local attraction. It is considered the oldest surviving Kossätenhaus in Mecklenburg. The building still stands on its original site and was fully restored using original building materials. Its age, location and traditional construction methods come together here, offering concrete points of interest for anyone interested in historic homes and a place’s architectural heritage.

The former political map is also part of the area’s history: a state border between Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Mecklenburg-Schwerin once separated Rabensdorf and Roduchelstorf. The landscape along the route later changed in connection with the road between Lübeck and Schwerin: construction began in 1849/50 and brought changes to road alignments and village landscapes. These developments offer different perspectives on local history, from the early modern period to changes in the 19th century.

Archaeological traces and landscape

Other finds date back much further. During construction work on the A20 near Roduchelstorf in 1997, archaeologists discovered remains of a settlement from the Roman Imperial period, dated to around 200 AD. In addition, a partially preserved skeleton from the Slavic period was found in a burial near Roduchelstorf. Together with the Kossätenhaus dating from 1616, these finds show how different historical periods are connected with the area.

The villages of Roduchelstorf, Rabensdorf and Cordshagen were naturally separated by marshy wetlands and the Papenhorst forest. A traditional field boundary, known as a hedgerow bank or “Knick,” has also been preserved in the fields. Remains of the old trade route towards Rehna add to this landscape. Anyone interested in how settlements and roads developed will find not only the historic building here, but also traces that can be explored through the landscape and the connections between the villages.

Cycling routes with different route profiles

Roduchelstorf features on two documented routes. The ADFC Lübeck–Grevesmühlen cycling route continues through Cordshagen to Roduchelstorf. The Northwest Mecklenburg Tour is a multi-day route from Wismar to Schönberg: before passing through Roduchelstorf, it follows a paved cycle path along the B104. From Roduchelstorf, it follows the cycle path beside the B104 towards Schönberg and crosses the A20 again.

The descriptions therefore differ in scope: the ADFC route covers the sequence through Cordshagen to Roduchelstorf, while the Northwest Mecklenburg Tour is described as a multi-day connection from Wismar to Schönberg and specifies the route along the B104. This helps you assess the routes by their stated course and the time frame described. Check the current route before setting out.

Keep your trip plans in mind when searching for accommodation

When looking for accommodation, the focus of your planned trip may be the deciding factor: Roduchelstorf combines the Kossätenhaus and other historical traces with documented cycling routes. Consider whether you would rather focus on architectural and settlement history or on a cycling tour. This can help you consider Roduchelstorf more specifically as a search destination, without choosing accommodation separately from your own travel plans.

Northwest Mecklenburg as the wider setting

As a broader travel destination, Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” in the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. The district’s landscape also includes terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and low-lying stretches of coast, glacial meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This wider setting complements the more specific themes of Roduchelstorf: Northwest Mecklenburg’s diverse landscapes can be considered alongside local history and cycling routes when planning the rest of your trip.
