Bützow brings together impressive Brick Gothic architecture, an unusual history and experiences on the Warnow. Its notable buildings include the collegiate church and the town hall; the Miniature Town, meanwhile, features replicas of historic buildings at a scale of 1:10. Those looking to include nature and activity in their visit will find cycling tours in the region, some of which start in Bützow. These varied themes offer different ways to shape your trip—from a walk around town to a seasonal boat trip.

Brick Gothic architecture and Bützow’s history

Bützow Collegiate Church dates back to the 13th century and is the oldest building in town. It is a three-aisled hall church built in the Brick Gothic style. As a monument of national significance, it is also part of the European Route of Brick Gothic. Architecture enthusiasts can explore its design, materials and history through this tangible example.

The Crooked House also tells stories of the town’s past: it is one of Bützow’s oldest buildings and was built in the 15th century as part of the episcopal castle complex. The town hall stands directly on the market square in the Old Town and was built in the Tudor Gothic style. In front of the town hall, the Goose Fountain recalls the Goose War—a small-scale revolution by Bützow’s citizens against a magistrate’s decree that sought to ban free-roaming geese from the town. These three places highlight different aspects of Bützow: ecclesiastical architecture, the former castle complex and a local story about everyday town life.

The Bützow Watermill represents another chapter in the town’s architectural history: it is a monument to 19th-century industrial architecture. The surviving complex stands to the left of Bützow Harbour, directly on the Warnow. Of the mill complex, the mill building and one of its original two waterwheels remain. This offers both a historical perspective and a tangible sense of which parts of the complex have been preserved.

Explore the Old Town on foot and travel by water

Bützow’s sights are easy to explore on foot from the lively town centre. At the old harbour in the town centre, parking is free of charge and has no time limit; there are also two additional parking spaces for buses. Since parking conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current rules before setting off.

From May to September, the electric motor vessel “Warnowlöper” operates between Bützow and Schwaan. The route runs along a section of the Warnow classified as the “Warnow Valley with Small Tributaries” Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and designated for gentle tourism. The towns of Bützow, Sternberg and Schwaan also invite visitors to linger during a trip on the water. If you plan to take the boat, check the timetable and sailing dates in advance.

Cycling is another option to include in your plans: the Bützow region has mostly circular routes, including some that start in Bützow. This is a different way to explore the area from a trip along the Warnow. Check the conditions on your chosen routes before setting off.

The Miniature Town: historic buildings in miniature

Bützow Miniature Town is set in a three-hectare park. Around 145 historic buildings dating from 1850 to 1900 are faithfully recreated there at a scale of 1:10. The approximate number of models may change as the park continues to develop. The grounds also include a wetland habitat, sculptures and an adventure playground; individual park features may change as well.

A workshop tour offers a closer look at the work behind the replicas, showing how their finer details are reconstructed. If this insight is important to your visit, check in advance whether a workshop tour is available on your chosen date. The Bützow Citizens’ and Tourist Information Office also arranges visits to the Miniature Town, guided tours of the historic Old Town and the surrounding region, boat trips on the Warnow, and boat and bicycle rentals. Ask the office about individual arrangements.

Plan your stay and accommodation

When looking for accommodation in Bützow, it helps to start by prioritising the experiences you want. A walk to the sights from the lively town centre, a seasonal trip on the Warnowlöper and a circular cycling tour each offer a different focus. The Miniature Town offers another option, with its models, additional park features and the possibility of a workshop tour. This lets you tailor your choice to your stay without having to turn the different offerings into a fixed itinerary.
