Discover Ahlbeck: Fenn, half-timbered church and history
Accommodation in Ahlbeck
Nature, architectural history and cycling offer three different perspectives on Ahlbeck. They include the distinctive Ahlbecker Seegrund wetland, the Baroque half-timbered church and an old railway embankment that connects the villages as a cycle path. Which of these aspects you want to shape your stay can also guide your choice of accommodation.
The Fenn: Moorland and rare species
The Ahlbecker Seegrund is a 1,166-hectare wetland and Germany’s largest calcareous quaking bog. Locally, it is also called the “Fenn”. Rare species are found in this habitat, including coralroot. This plant grows only here in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Fenn therefore offers a tangible point of interest for travellers interested in distinctive landscapes and their biodiversity.
When choosing a destination, you can consider whether you want a moorland landscape or the village’s history to shape your stay. The Seegrund gives Ahlbeck a distinctive natural character; its unusual plants add a specific topic for nature-minded visitors to this landscape.
Church, local history and local heritage room
Ahlbeck’s church is a Baroque half-timbered building erected in 1759. Its 31-metre-high tower is topped by a dome and an open lantern. The church’s organ was built in 1832 by August Wilhelm Grüneberg of Stettin. Next to the church stands a summer lime tree almost 300 years old, designated a natural monument. Several nearby houses display an architectural style typical of the region.
Ahlbeck’s history dates back to the 12th century. The settlement was founded on the shore of a lake rich in eels. Ahlbeck thus brings together several historical periods: its early history, the church building and the 19th-century organ. The neighbouring houses and the summer lime tree add to the picture of the church’s built and natural surroundings.
The local heritage room is another option for visitors interested in local history. Visits are arranged by appointment, so please arrange a time in advance.
Cycling and other activities
The old railway embankment serves as a cycle path connecting the villages. Check the local infrastructure before setting off. The Fennhof offers another option for planning an active visit: it is a riding stable with facilities for trail riding and cycling. Services and availability may change; check the current offer before visiting.
If you are travelling with children, it can help to discuss everyone’s interests in advance and plan your day accordingly.
Nature across the wider destination
Across the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald destination, the view broadens to the county’s natural landscapes. The three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of its area. The Ueckermünder Heide offers another regional point of comparison: the DBU natural heritage site covers just under 10,000 hectares and is more than 80 percent forested. Large parts of the heath overlap with the Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park. The Ahlbecker Seegrund and the heath thus show different scales of nature within the destination.
