Übach-Palenberg combines green leisure activities in the Wurm Valley with reminders of different eras. Minigolf and a multigenerational playground are among the leisure options; a chapel, water tower and traces of mining give the local history its varied character. Teverener Heide, in the wider Heinsberg travel destination, also brings nature and hiking opportunities into the picture. This means nature, leisure and cultural history offer different interests to explore during a stay.

Green leisure activities in the Wurm Valley

The Wurm Valley is a green leisure oasis between Palenberg and Marienberg. The leisure area includes minigolf and a multigenerational playground; there is also an opportunity to refresh yourself and stop for a bite to eat year-round. Exercise, play and a break can thus be enjoyed as different parts of an outing. Before setting off, check the availability of the facilities, the opening arrangements for the place to eat and the access conditions; play equipment and access options may change. One access point is via the parking lot on Schley street in Marienberg, and another is via a footpath from Aachener Straße in Palenberg.

Chapel, water tower and mining history

St. Peter's Chapel, also known as Karl's Chapel, is considered one of the significant early churches in the Rhineland. It is also a surviving relic of the area's early Christian period. The water tower, visible from far away, is a landmark of Übach-Palenberg and is about 49 meters high. In 1989, it was added to the city's list of historic monuments. From 1912 to 1962, it supplied water to the Carolus Magnus mine; during a professional restoration, it was painted blue.

The Carolus Magnus Centrum is located in the former administrative building of the Carolus Magnus mine and serves as a venue for public and cultural events. The Bauhaus-style listed building retains its original structure. Schloss Zweibrüggen and the old Zweibrüggen mill also add to the picture: the palace was built in 1788 in the neoclassical style, and the mill has an impressive waterwheel and a beautiful garden. The foundations of a Roman bath, discovered in 1988, are also located in the Wurm Valley.

Heinsberg region and Teverener Heide

Übach-Palenberg is part of the Heinsberg region, which lies in the wider Heinsberg travel destination, in the westernmost part of Germany on the southern Lower Rhine. Teverener Heide is a 450-hectare nature reserve in the Heinsberg region, extending across the areas of the municipality of Gangelt and the towns of Geilenkirchen and Übach-Palenberg. Its landscape includes open heathland, swampy marshes, quiet lakes, inland dunes and wooded areas.
