The character of the Heinsberg district is shaped by forests and heathland in Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. At the same time, there is plenty to discover, from marshes and lakes to art and industrial history: different types of landscape define Teverener Heide, while BEGAS HAUS and Shaft 3 explore distinct chapters of cultural history. This lets you plan your trip around what interests you most—spending time outdoors, observing nature or exploring art and mining.

Heathland, marshes and a variety of walking routes

Teverener Heide is a 450-hectare nature reserve in the Heinsberg region. It extends across the municipality of Gangelt and the towns of Geilenkirchen and Ăśbach-Palenberg. Open heathland, boggy marshes, quiet lakes, inland dunes and woodland shape the area. Four circular walking trails vary in length: the Moor Trail is 5.8 kilometres long, the Heath Trail 6 kilometres, the Lakes Trail 7.1 kilometres and the Large Circular Trail 9.4 kilometres. The starting points are at the designated car parks in Scherpenseel, Grotenrath and Hohenbusch. It is worth checking current trail conditions before setting out on a specific walk.

The Meinweg area offers a different setting for nature and outdoor activities: this landscape of woodland, heathland and marshes links the Heinsberg and Viersen districts in North Rhine-Westphalia with the Dutch province of Limburg. The national park region has circular walking trails of varying difficulty and lengths from 5 to 13 kilometres. Themed options include mill walks, the Smugglers’ Route and town walks. Comparing trail lengths when planning reveals a range of options in both areas; the Meinweg area also offers a variety of themes. Schwalm-Nette Nature Park in the Heinsberg district also has certified premium hiking and walking trails.

TĂĽschenbroicher MĂĽhle in the TĂĽschenbroich district of Wegberg is another named spot for nature watching: visitors can observe birds including kestrels, common buzzards, kingfishers, nightingales and golden orioles. Viewing opportunities vary by season, so planning a visit is different from planning a walk with a set distance.

Art and mining as distinct reasons to visit

At BEGAS HAUS in the town of Heinsberg, visitors can learn about four generations of the Begas artist dynasty. The collection is presented in a historic ensemble of buildings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The artist dynasty and the dates of the buildings provide two distinct points of reference: the art of one family across several generations and the history of the historic buildings.

At Shaft 3 in Hückelhoven, visitors descend underground into the history of the former “Sophia-Jacoba” mine and can learn how hard coal was mined there until 1997. This adds a very different subject to the art at BEGAS HAUS: the former hard-coal mining industry.

For cyclists, Tim Berresheim’s Art Journey combines movement and art. The route is around 90 kilometres long and follows established cycle paths through the Heinsberg region. At 14 stops, the artist’s native home is brought together with his digital works. This is a way to discover art along a cycling route rather than focusing a visit on a single building.

Choose accommodation to suit your interests

When looking for accommodation in the Heinsberg district, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: a particular walking route, seasonal birdwatching, art or mining history. If hiking is your main interest, use the stated distances and the different trail themes as a guide. If you want to alternate between nature and culture, BEGAS HAUS, Shaft 3 or the Art Journey can also be reasons to visit in their own right. This helps you decide which experiences matter most for your trip before choosing where to stay.
