Marsberg: Geological History and Unique Experiences
Accommodation in Marsberg
Marsberg brings together geological history, a rich church heritage and a wide range of activities. Across the municipality, 13 geological sites explain Marsberg’s development over the past 400 million years. GeoPark GrenzWelten and the Museum of the City of Marsberg established the sites in 2020. Together, they explore an extensive span of geological time.
The collegiate church is also associated with a historical tradition: its origins are attributed to Charlemagne, who is said to have had a Christian church built in place of the Saxon shrine of Irminsul. In Obermarsberg, you can still see remains of the old town wall, including the Water Tower and Buttenturm. Here, you can encounter both a traditional founding story and visible architectural remains.
Special Places and a Variety of Activities
The bird care station in Marsberg-Essentho has been operating for more than 40 years. Visits and guided tours are possible only by prior arrangement, so please arrange your visit in advance. This allows you to plan your visit deliberately rather than assuming you can drop in without an appointment.
On the Diemel near Giershagen, at the Grube Reinhard recreation area (charcoal kiln site), there is an information center housed in an open, roofed multipurpose pavilion. It focuses on biomimetics, the regional mining industry and geology. This brings together three distinct topics: natural principles, mining and geological history. If you plan to visit the information center, check access arrangements in advance.
The Marsberg archery course is located on the site of a former copper mine and covers 5.9 hectares. At present, 3.4 hectares are used for its two rounds. These figures refer to the entire site and the area currently used for the rounds. As land use may change, we recommend checking the latest information before your visit.
The “Griffbude” adds to the choice with a 150-square-meter bouldering area, 33 climbing routes and three difficulty levels. The “Bolz-Arena,” by contrast, offers indoor soccer: the pitch has green artificial turf and a playing area measuring 20 × 13 meters. Bouldering and soccer therefore offer different kinds of activity, which you can prioritize when planning your trip according to your interests. For current availability, check with each operator.
Nature in the Hochsauerland District
In the Hochsauerland district, north of Meerhof, a district of Marsberg, lies the Siebenbuchen nature reserve. There, the forest adventure trail features interactive stations, bridges over wetlands and bodies of water, and observation platforms. These stations and natural features are part of Siebenbuchen, adding a distinct natural highlight in the district to Marsberg’s geological history and historic traces.
