Padberg is located on a distinctive mountain spur, bounded by the deeply incised, steep valley slopes of the Diemel and Hoppecke. In places, the spur is only about 1.3 kilometres wide. The terrain therefore tells the story of two different landscape forms: a striking high elevation and the narrow valleys along its edges. The village’s history also has tangible points of interest, from the former synagogue to its churches and hiking trails.

Mountain spur, narrow valley and mining history

At the southern foot of Padberg, a gorge-like narrow valley lies between the Obermühle mill and the road bridge to Adorf. It forms a striking contrast to the spur, which is only about 1.3 kilometres wide in places. Anyone interested in landforms will find clear points of reference here for planning a visit: the spur as a highland feature and the narrow valley as a passage between steep slopes.

To the northeast of the village, at Bellerstein, are the remains of a formerly larger open-cast mine for red iron ore. The mining history thus adds another topic to the landscape impressions. The remains point to the area’s former use; they are distinct historical sites from the churches and memorial places in the village.

Synagogue, churches and village history

The surviving Padberg synagogue is a simple half-timbered building with a pitched roof. Research suggests it was built around 1790 and served as a synagogue until 1931. After restoration work was completed, a memorial site dedicated to Jewish history in Padberg and the surrounding area was established there. Its architectural style, approximate date of construction and later memorial function give the site several historical layers.

The churches also offer distinct points of interest. The Old Padberg Church of St. Peter stands on the steep slope of the Alter Hagen above the village. It contains two gravestones belonging to the old Padberg comital family, dated 1557 and 1585. The New Church of St. Mary Magdalene, meanwhile, has a high altar dating from 1670, created by the Papen family of sculptors from Giershagen. The two gravestone dates and the 17th-century altar bring different periods of local art and family history to life.

The tourist attractions include a village walk and sights such as the village square, the Pumpenstein, the New Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the Old Church of St. Peter and the former synagogue. This lets you take different interests into account when planning your visit: historic buildings, memorial sites or other places in the village. These sights complement the natural attractions and hiking opportunities rather than replacing them.

Hiking trails and different types of tours

The Marsberg Bionics Trail runs through Diemelsee Nature Park along the Padberg 2 hiking trail. Bionics explores what technical solutions can learn from models found in nature. The trail is 4.8 kilometres long. Allow about 90 minutes for the walk itself, or around two and a half hours if you visit the stations. This distinction makes a practical difference when planning your day: the shorter estimate is for hiking, while the longer one includes time at the stations.

There are also guided day hikes around the Padberg Ring. Custom hiking tours can be booked there for groups. Another option is Stage 14 of the southern route of the Sauerland Forest Route, which leads from Giershagen via Padberg to Helminghausen. You can choose between a route with a specified distance and duration, guided day hikes around the Padberg Ring, and a stage that includes Padberg as part of a longer route.

Padberg is in Diemelsee Nature Park and right on the Diemel Cycle Path. There are also numerous hiking and circular trails, as well as guided hikes that can be booked. Whether you would rather focus your stay on the landscape, outdoor activities or culture, these trails and historic sites offer different ways to plan your visit. You can search for accommodation in Padberg for your stay.
