Discover Oberdiebach: Rhine landscapes and history
Accommodation in Oberdiebach
Oberdiebach combines a striking Rhine landscape with wine-growing, hiking trails and a rich history. The village has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002. If you are looking for accommodation, your preferred focus for the trip can be a good starting point: the Schellengang is associated with hiking and scenery, while St. Moritz is known for its architectural history and art.
Vineyards and trails along the Rhine
The Schellengang runs through a valley on the Rhine side that is associated with the historic border between the Palatinate and Mainz. Riesling has been grown on the slopes for more than 500 years. Wine-growing and a landscape steeped in history come together here, with changing views of the Rhine and its side valleys along the route. The 11.3-kilometre Schellengang is a premium hiking trail in Oberdiebach. Its route passes through forests and open fields, crosses an area used for a grazing project and includes the FĂĽrstenbergblick rest stop.
There is also a connection to the RheinBurgen-Weg: the RheinBurgen-Weg and the Schellengang circular trail can be reached via a connecting path in about ten minutes. As signage and access may change, check trail conditions before setting out. Another cycling landmark is the Turner-Route location in Rheindiebach: it is on a meadow by the Rhine riverbank, next to the Rhine Cycle Route and near the barbecue hut. It can be reached from the Rhine cycling route by bike without a detour.
Church history at St. Moritz
St. Moritz is a three-aisled Gothic hall church with five bays and a choir ending in a 5/8 plan. The lower level of the west tower is Romanesque. The building thus brings together different architectural forms. A predecessor building, a Romanesque pier basilica, was first mentioned in 1258. Inside, heavily restored wall paintings from the time of construction, the first third of the 15th century, as well as from around 1470 to 1480, have been preserved. There are also remains of the choir stalls dating from 1508. These works from different periods make the church’s long history tangible through specific architectural and artistic details.
Nature and practical information
The habitat at Bischofshub near Oberdiebach supports the rare wryneck. Its presence was still recorded there in 2021; wildlife populations can change over time for ecological reasons. A 2021 description also notes that GNOR had grazed the former vineyard land at Bischofshub with Exmoor ponies since 2010, later adding goats. This grazing may change.
