Bobenheim-Roxheim offers several themes that can shape a trip: the landscape along the historic Roxheim Old Rhine, birds, water activities and trails through the town’s history. Which of these interests you most is a good starting point for choosing your accommodation.

Nature and water along the Roxheim Old Rhine

The Roxheim Old Rhine is a historic former river channel. In the eastern part of Bobenheim-Roxheim, five nature reserves lie within the Palatinate Rhine Meadows Landscape Protection Area. Wetlands, reed beds and riparian woodland provide habitats for diverse flora and fauna. The bird park offers another way to see wildlife: it is home to more than twelve bird species, including flamingos, birds of prey, cranes, turacos and parrots.

Swimming is permitted at Silbersee within the bathing areas marked with buoys. Canoeing, sailing, rowing and windsurfing are subject to a seasonal restriction: these activities are prohibited from November 1 to March 15. Before your visit, check whether there have been any subsequent local changes to the water regulations.

The Way of St. James and trails through the town

The Palatinate Way of St. James begins in the northern part of the Bobenheim-Roxheim area and heads from there towards Speyer. Beyond Speyer, it continues through the Palatinate Forest towards Hornbach. The Bobenheim-Roxheim local Way of St. James loop connects the route with the town: it was inaugurated in 2005 and includes a cycle tour through the municipality’s history led by Klaus Graber.

Stops on the local loop include St. Maria Magdalena Roxheim, the Protestant church in Roxheim-Bobenheim and the Jewish cemetery. The tour meets at the Im Busch open-air stage; by car, reach it via the Rheinufer 1 exit from the B9. The tour is free of charge. The Olympic Day Run route in Bobenheim-Roxheim has a different story: it opened on June 25, 2005. Check its condition before using it.

Churches, museum and crafts

St. Maria Magdalena Roxheim was built in 1833/34 in the Neoclassical style. The church organ has 37 stops. The local history museum run by the Association for Nature Conservation and Local Heritage is housed in the former Roxheim town hall and has the largest collection on the natural environment of the Rhine meadows in the Palatinate.

Traditional crafts also tell the story of the landscape: basket weaving and the making of reed mats were among the crafts practiced in the Bobenheim-Roxheim area. Willow and reeds from the wetlands were used. Thus, alongside church architecture and the organ, the focus also falls on materials and techniques associated with the local meadows.

The wider region: Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis

In Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis, wooded Rhine meadows, fields, and vegetable and wine growing add to the regional landscape. Along the Rhine, there are also meadows with areas resembling primeval forest and bathing lakes. The district has an extensive network of cycling routes. The Kraut-und-RĂĽben cycle route runs through fields and villages and along the Rhine.

The cultural attractions of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis also have their own distinctive character. Museums in Böhl-Iggelheim feature an exhibition on dyeing by the Bechtold family, who operated a black, blue and fast-dyeing works in Iggelheim in the 19th century; blue dyeing is recognized as intangible cultural heritage. In Schifferstadt, the Day of the Golden Hat has been celebrated every year since 2018.
