Siebeldingen: Viticulture and an Unusual Church Tower
Accommodation in Siebeldingen
Among Siebeldingen’s distinctive features are vine research at Geilweilerhof, the Im Sonnenschein vineyard area and the St. Quintinius Simultaneous Church. They range from viticulture to visible local history. Guided experiences add to these interests; for a different way to explore, there are also cycling tours through the Southern Palatinate countryside.
An Early Gothic Landmark
The St. Quintinius Simultaneous Church is considered a landmark of Siebeldingen and is one of the town’s cultural monuments. Its unusually twisted tower is 30 metres high; the church itself is an early Gothic building dating from around 1300. Those interested in historic architecture will find a clear connection here between architectural style and a distinctive appearance. The church is open on Sundays. Check the opening information before your visit.
Vine Research and Vineyard Landscapes
Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen was endowed in 1926 to establish a vine-breeding and experimental station. The Julius KĂĽhn Institute breeds new grape varieties at Geilweilerhof and operates a vine gene bank, experimental plots and experimental wine cellars. This means viticulture can be viewed not only as a landscape feature, but also through breeding and experimental cultivation.
The Siebeldinger Im Sonnenschein covers 100 hectares on south-facing slopes of the Queich Valley. The soils are characterised by shell limestone, sand, sandstone, gravel and loam; Pinot varieties and Riesling are grown here. The area, hillside location and soil profile give viticulture here a distinctive landscape character and complement the research focus at Geilweilerhof. The annual Culinary Vineyard Walk is also associated with the vineyard.
Guided Trails and Wine Tastings
Guided experience walks through Siebeldingen and Birkweiler cover viticulture, local history and the history of Geilweilerhof. A guided vineyard experience may include a wine tasting in the vineyard; in bad weather, a winery is planned as an alternative. Tour packages and availability may change. If you would like to include such an offer in your plans, check the current options in advance.
Another activity is guided cycling tours through the Southern Palatinate countryside. They lead to selected viewpoints and places for breaks; their packages and availability may also change.
Further Perspectives in the Southern Wine Route
Within the wider Southern Wine Route destination, the region borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve Nature Park. Landeck Castle has a 25-metre-high platform with views across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest; visibility depends on the weather. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle. The hiking trails also offer different experiences: the easy, 3.6-kilometre TrifelsErlebnisWeg features 18 play and learning stations; its digital content may change. The 6.1-kilometre Keschde-Erlebnisweg is a circular route around Föhrlenberg that is suitable for pushchairs and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut. Seasonal conditions may affect access.
