Discover Busenberg through Drachenfels, a certified circular trail and a distinctive architectural history. The Busenberger Holzschuhpfad forms a 360-degree loop around the village, linking scenic highlights and offering eleven viewpoints. The Drachenfels ruins are also part of the trail; you can walk the entire loop or just individual sections.

Drachenfels: Rock Formations, Views and History

The Drachenfels ruins stand on two steep, narrow red sandstone rocks. From there, the view stretches across the hills of the Palatinate Forest–Vosges du Nord Biosphere Reserve. Rock chambers, towers and heavily fortified shield walls define the site; a gatehouse and the remains of a flanking tower have also survived. Here, striking rock formations meet historic structural remains.

The castle was destroyed by citizens of Strasbourg in 1335. Its stone became part of Busenberg’s architectural history: the Catholic parish church was built between 1760 and 1767 using stone from the ruined castle. The Schlösschen, a manor house in the village centre, was also built with Drachenfels stone in 1778. Both buildings show how the castle’s material was reused in later structures.

Views and Climbing

The 35-metre-high Schulerturm is part of the Drachenfels castle complex in Busenberg. A signposted hiking trail leads to the castle grounds; the Schulerturm rock has many summit routes for experienced climbers. Climbing rocks around Busenberg may be temporarily closed during the breeding season. Check whether any restrictions apply before climbing.

Puhlstein is accessible year-round and offers views across the Wasgau. Temporary safety measures may affect access, so check the current situation before visiting. The view from Puhlstein and the distant panorama from the Drachenfels ruins offer different perspectives on the landscape.

Refreshments and Getting Around

The Drachenfelshütte below the castle ruins is a place for hikers to stop, with a beer garden and a simple regional menu. Nearby Weißensteiner Hof is known as an excursion restaurant with far-reaching views. For travel to the area, Busenberg is served by bus route 545 between Bad Bergzabern, Birkenhördt, Vorderweidenthal and Dahn. Timetables may change, so check departure times before your journey.

More Perspectives in the SĂĽdwestpfalz

The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the wider SĂĽdwestpfalz destination. Well-maintained, waymarked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past red sandstone rocks. Near Hinterweidenthal, the Teufelstisch is 14 metres high and a popular excursion destination. In the Felsenland, cycling routes follow paved forest and farm tracks away from main traffic.

The German Shoe Museum in Hauenstein adds a cultural dimension. Housed in a former shoe factory, it showcases the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in the SĂĽdwestpfalz and how shoes are made. This regional perspective therefore encompasses crafts and industrial history as well as rocks and trails.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

The circular trail and local history offer a different way to plan your day than the Schulerturm summit routes, which appeal to experienced climbers. If you plan to climb, take possible closures during the breeding season into account; the Holzschuhpfad, by contrast, can be walked in full or in sections.
