Welschbillig: Roman Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Welschbillig
Welschbillig combines traces of Roman history and medieval architecture with hiking trails that offer different highlights: the Spitolsweg has a stated duration and rest stops, while the hike to Schilzenburg names a panoramic view as its highlight. There is also the landscape along the Falzerbach and bookable alpaca experiences at Schiltzhof. This lets you include culture, outdoor activity and special encounters in your travel plans.
Roman Traces and a Medieval Castle
Welschbillig is associated with a Roman villa complex and an ornamental pond used for boating, which was surrounded by 112 herms. The complex was uncovered during construction of the parish church. Most of the herm heads recovered are displayed at the Trier State Museum; the complex is considered unique north of the Alps. The number of herms makes the discovery especially vivid: the pond’s design was part of a complex whose remains can today also be seen through the heads on display.
Several elements of the medieval moated castle have survived. These include the remains of the northwest tower, a gatehouse with two round towers, and a stone bridge over the moat. Parts of the town wall, which once stretched 1.5 kilometres, as well as the church and the administrative building on the castle grounds are also part of this architectural heritage. The surviving elements reveal different aspects of the former fortifications: the towers and gatehouse, the crossing over the moat, and sections of the town wall.
The Basilica of Saint Peter is a vaulted church built from yellow sandstone in neo-Gothic style. It was constructed between 1888 and 1890 on the site of the former castle. The cultural history of the town is further enriched by an annual theatre tradition performed in Welschbilliger Platt. The architecture and dialect point to different aspects of the town: its building history as well as a local tradition that is regularly maintained.
