Nister: River Valley, Nauberg and Local History
Accommodation in Nister
Nister lies in the valley of the Great Nister. Its river scenery, local history and hiking trails offer different perspectives on a stay. In Nauberg, the focus is on signposted circular trails through wooded basalt hills; historical sites include Nistria Castle and the Nister Mill. The Nister Cycle Route offers a different scale: it follows the river along a 67-kilometre route from west of the Fuchskaute to the Sieg near Wissen. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to explore the landscape on foot, discover traces of the past or take in a longer cycling route.
Landscape between river and basalt
In the Nister uplands, woodland and open land each account for roughly half of the area. The landscape includes a deep, winding valley carved by the Nister. In the Kroppacher Schweiz, cliffs and ridges of resistant rock contribute to the area's character. Numerous mining tunnels in the northwest of the Nister uplands point to the former importance of mining in the area. These varied landscape features provide a changing backdrop for hiking, from river valley and woodland to open land and distinctive rock formations. Nauberg is connected with Nister's local heritage and is also a hiking area with wooded basalt hills.
Local history and the Nister Mill
Nister's historical origins are associated with Nistria Castle, near what is now Marienstatt Abbey. Around 1500, the settlement's centre shifted roughly three kilometres east to its present location. The coat of arms reflects another local connection: the hammer and anvil represent the hammer mills in Nister. These details tell different aspects of the town's history—from its historical origins and the later relocation of its centre to the emblem on the municipal coat of arms.
The Nister Mill is also associated with a specific chapter in history: it was connected with Konrad Adenauer's hiding place in September 1944. A memorial plaque commemorates the episode. The mill is privately owned and can be viewed from the surrounding hiking trails, but not from inside. If you include it in your plans, take into account that you can see it from outside rather than visit the building.
Hiking loops in Nauberg
Three signposted circular trails can be distinguished by length. The U1 runs for 5.5 kilometres from Nister to Kellerhof in the Nauberg state forest. Two other signposted circular trails through Nauberg are the X1, at 4.5 kilometres, and the X2, at 6.5 kilometres. This makes X1 the shortest of the three routes and X2 the longest, with U1 in between. If you want to choose based on distance, the stated lengths offer a direct comparison. Check the current signs before setting out. The Steinsel can only be reached on foot—another practical detail to bear in mind when planning your routes and transport.
Cycling along the Nister
The 67-kilometre Nister Cycle Route follows the river from west of the Fuchskaute to the Sieg near Wissen. Along the way, it passes Marienstatt Monastery and the Kroppacher Schweiz. At Heimborn-Ehrlich, the route reaches the confluence, where the Kleine Nister flows into the Great Nister. The cycle route is therefore quite different from the shorter circular trails in Nauberg: it is a long route along the river with several named stops. This gives you two distinct route options to consider for your trip: circular trails between 4.5 and 6.5 kilometres long, and a 67-kilometre cycle route.
