Discover Hüttersdorf: nature trails and local history
Accommodation in Hüttersdorf
Hüttersdorf offers two distinct ways to plan your trip: trails through forests and protected landscapes, and churches with a long local history. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you’ll find routes of varying lengths and difficulty. If you’re interested in local history, you can discover the Parish Church of the Elevation of the Cross and the Marienkapelle, each with its own historical connections.
Pond, wetland and hiking trails
The Engelgrundweiher pond lies on the edge of the Hüttersdorf district. The adjoining wetland is part of the 32.3-hectare Engelgrund-Girtelwiese nature reserve. The Hüttersdorf Circular Trail also follows paved paths through part of the protected Engelgrund wetland. The circular trail therefore combines paved sections with a route through this protected natural area.
The Hüttersdorf Nordic Walking Park has easy, intermediate and difficult routes measuring 4, 5.5 and 9 kilometres. Information boards at the starting points provide details about the routes, while elevation profiles show uphill and downhill sections. This allows you to consider both route length and the stated difficulty level when planning. The different profiles offer practical guidance when choosing a hike based on its length and elevation changes.
The 13-kilometre Bach- und Burrenpfad premium hiking trail runs through the Hüttersdorf area. For 1.3 kilometres, the trail passes beneath towering beeches and oaks. These trees have marked the municipal boundary between Hüttersdorf and Piesbach for more than two centuries. The route also offers a notable connection to local boundary history: the trees are both a defining feature of the landscape and historic boundary markers.
Another example of a trail in the Hüttersdorf forest is the Sodixpfädchen. This easy-to-walk, approximately 1-kilometre activity and discovery trail between the Sodix-Hütte and the Wiesenersch Kreuz in the direction of Galgenberg was inaugurated on 29 October 2024. At the time of its inauguration, it featured several stations, benches, information boards and lifelike animal sculptures. They were designed for movement and relaxation, as well as listening to and observing nature and the forest. If you’re planning to visit the trail today, it’s advisable to check its current accessibility in advance.
Churches and history in Hüttersdorf
The Parish Church of the Elevation of the Cross in Hüttersdorf was built in 1958/59 to the plans and under the supervision of architect Hans Geimer. It was consecrated on 8 November 1959. The parish’s history goes back much further: it is documented as early as around 700. In Hüttersdorf, you can therefore encounter two distinct periods—the parish’s early history and the construction of today’s church in the mid-20th century.
The Marienkapelle in Hüttersdorf was built in 1948 in the Old Cemetery. It was erected in gratitude that Hüttersdorf was largely spared during the Second World War. Its location also reflects local history: the chapel stands on the Nachtrech, the prominent hill where the first Hüttersdorf parish church was built. The chapel’s altarpiece was created by local artist Nikolaus Wilhelm.
When looking for accommodation in Hüttersdorf, these different themes can help you decide what kind of stay you’re looking for: the trails offer several designated route lengths, while the parish church and Marienkapelle tell different chapters of the area’s history. This lets you plan the rest of your trip around what you’re most keen to discover in Hüttersdorf.
