Klostermansfeld brings together a visible mining heritage, railway history and a Romanesque monastery church. At the local history museum, a former farm labourer’s house and a separate room with mining exhibits sit side by side; south of the town, an almost bare spoil heap shapes the landscape. The railway services are also clearly distinct: Klostermansfeld’s standard-gauge station is right next to Benndorf’s narrow-gauge station, and the Way of St James passes St. Marien.

Mining history at the museum and in the landscape

The local history museum is housed in a former farm labourer’s house dating from 1852. One room is devoted entirely to mining and displays slate finds, photographs and old miners’ uniforms. The collection also includes locally donated items, among them the cot of a former mayor. Mining exhibits are thus displayed alongside personal everyday objects. A mural added to the gable end in 2024 depicts Klostermansfeld’s three landmarks.

Admission to a guided tour is free. Visitor arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check before travelling. Parking is available near the local history museum; here, too, you should check the current arrangements in advance.

Mining has had a strong influence on Klostermansfeld. The large spoil heap south of the town is almost entirely bare because the rock contains heavy metals. Alongside the exhibits in the local history museum, this striking landscape feature is another reminder of the town’s mining history.

Two railway lines, two different routes

Klostermansfeld and Benndorf stations are right next to each other: Klostermansfeld is the standard-gauge station, while Benndorf is the narrow-gauge station, with a track gauge of 750 millimetres. Klostermansfeld station building houses the Mansfelder Bergwerksbahn’s ticket and souvenir sales. As sales arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information.

The Wipperliese is a 20-kilometre branch line to Wippra, with a stop at Klostermansfeld. Its historic train journey runs through the Wipper Valley and connects the town with stations including Mansfeld, Vatterode, Biesenrode, Friesdorf and Wippra. The Mansfelder Bergwerksbahn is a separate railway: a mining-related technical monument associated with Klostermansfeld, in operation since 1880 and a unique part of German railway history. Its historic train journey runs from Benndorf/Klostermansfeld via Thondorf and Siersleben to the KupferkammerhĂĽtte in Hettstedt. Operating days may change, so check current dates in advance.

When the Mansfelder Bergwerksbahn is not running, you can view old steam locomotives at the station on the road from Klostermansfeld towards Benndorf. This depends on railway operations and access.

St. Marien Monastery Church and walking routes

St. Marien Monastery Church was probably built around 1140 as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica belonging to a Benedictine monastery; 1170 is regarded as its official founding year. Romanesque and Early Gothic features were reconstructed during restoration work in the 1960s. The church lies on the southern route of the Romanesque Road, and the Way of St James passes right by it. Guided visits are possible by prior arrangement.
