Discover Könnern
Accommodation in Könnern
Könnern’s almost medieval town centre has plenty to discover; the Saale floodplain offers a different view of the town, with walking paths and quiet ponds. Könnern is also connected to the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park. These interests provide practical guidance when choosing where to stay.
Saale floodplain, hiking trails and nature
The Saale Cycle Path adds to Könnern’s leisure options. Hiking trails in the nature park run through the Saale floodplains between Könnern and Bernburg; the protected Plötzkau floodplain forest can also be explored via hiking trails. This offers cycling and several kinds of hikes as different ways to explore. Check current trail conditions before setting out; before visiting the floodplain forest, find out about access requirements.
Könnern’s wider leisure area also includes nature reserves. These add protected landscapes to the nature theme, while the trails through the Saale floodplains and the Plötzkau floodplain forest offer specific hiking options.
Town history and cultural heritage
Discover historic buildings and churches in Könnern and Wettin-Löbejün. The wider Könnern area also includes historic burial sites and architectural monuments. A virtual cultural heritage tour presents historic buildings, monuments, the surrounding area and rest stops; it can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by car. This means the cultural heritage ranges from individual buildings and churches to a tour that also takes in the surrounding area.
The Naturhof Zellewitz runs the “Life 150 Years Ago” project, which presents historic rural life. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
More tours and culture in the Salzlandkreis district
The Salzlandkreis district has tourist routes for boats, bicycles, cars and walking. The Luther Trail and the Way of St James combine nature, culture and history on foot.
The cycling routes also offer different highlights: the 3-Flüsse Cycle Route is a day trip of around 36 kilometres between Ilberstedt and Hohenerxleben, following the Bode, Saale and Wipper rivers. The Bode Cycle Path crosses the Salzlandkreis district over about 51 kilometres, passing through floodplain landscapes, historic towns and charming villages. The Saale Cycle Path runs through the Salzlandkreis district between Rothenburg in the Saalekreis district and Barby, taking in a peaceful river landscape of woods and meadows.
Another point of interest is the Ring Sanctuary of Pömmelte in the Salzlandkreis district: it is a reconstruction of a ritual site more than 4,000 years old. The 115-metre-wide complex of wooden palisade rings, pits and banks can be viewed from a nine-metre-high observation platform. The Ring Sanctuary is freely accessible year-round, except during certain events. There is also a free car park and accessible toilets. Check for possible event-related exceptions before visiting.
