Plötzkau combines castle history with nature trails along the Saale. Plötzkau Castle rises above the Saale floodplain; trails in the floodplain forest invite you to explore the river landscape and its wildlife and plant life. This gives your trip two distinct focal points: culture and architecture around the castle, or activity along the Saale.

Plötzkau Castle: from medieval fortress to Renaissance palace

From 1566, the medieval fortress was converted into a Renaissance residential palace. The tower was raised by two storeys and is 37 metres high. The castle thus brings together different historical reference points: the medieval fortress as its predecessor and the later Renaissance residence. The castle is considered a landmark rising above the Saale floodplain.

The castle houses a museum that includes several rooms and the tower and covers a range of topics. The 37-metre-high tower also offers views across the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park. The castle’s history, the museum and the views of the landscape offer different ways to experience a visit: you can explore the site through its architectural history or focus on the surrounding natural landscape.

Trails through the Plötzkau floodplain forest

The Plötzkau floodplain forest nature trail is about two kilometres long and follows the Saale. Its signposted route runs along a bend in the Saale below the castle. Three large information boards explain the wildlife and plant life of the floodplain forest. The trail connects the river landscape with specific nature topics, without requiring a long-distance route: the nature trail is approximately two kilometres long. Exploring the nature trail by bicycle is also recommended.

Another hiking option is a six-kilometre circular route in the Plötzkau floodplain forest. It starts at the castle and returns there. The two distance options help you choose: the nature trail is shorter, at about two kilometres, while the circular route covers six kilometres and includes the return to the castle.

There are three places to sit along the hiking route. These include a covered rest area at Lesewitzer Laube by the fishing pond. Below the castle is a hiking car park, providing access to the trail and the floodplain forest. Along with the route distances, there are also specific landmarks to help you find your way: the castle grounds, the bend in the Saale, the information boards and the rest areas.

More ways to explore the Salzlandkreis district

Those looking beyond Plötzkau to the Salzlandkreis district will find other distinctive cultural and nature attractions. The Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary is a reconstruction of a cult site more than 4,000 years old. The 115-metre-wide complex consists of wooden palisade rings, pits and ramparts and can be viewed from a nine-metre-high observation platform. The Salzlandkreis district is also represented on the Romanesque Road, with six stops in five towns.

There are other options for a regional cycling trip, each with a different focus. The Three Rivers Cycle Route is an approximately 36-kilometre day trip between Ilberstedt and Hohenerxleben, following the Bode, Saale and Wipper rivers. The Bode Cycle Route crosses the Salzlandkreis district for about 51 kilometres and passes through floodplain landscapes, historic towns and villages. These examples offer a broader regional perspective than the trails in the Plötzkau floodplain forest: here, the Saale and the castle are the local focus, while elsewhere, longer cycling routes and other destinations in the Salzlandkreis district await.
