Annaburg brings together Renaissance architecture, porcelain history and quiet woodland paths in a varied townscape. The palace and Amtshaus represent different periods of construction; the Porzellaneum traces the history of the material and invites visitors to create their own designs, while the wildlife park and Zweistromweg add a natural touch. During your stay, you can therefore choose how to balance cultural history, creative experiences and walks.

Renaissance and Historic Architecture

Annaburg Palace is a four-winged Renaissance palace, built between 1572 and 1575 for Anna, Princess of Denmark and Norway. Its dedication and construction period place the palace at the heart of Annaburg’s Renaissance history. The Amtshaus was built in 1578. Its surviving features from the 16th and 17th centuries include a painted wooden-beam ceiling, vaulted kitchens and historic door surrounds. Annaburg thus brings together two architectural scales: the four-winged palace and the surviving decorative features of the Amtshaus.

Porcelain History to Explore and Create

The museum at the Annaburg Porzellaneum documents more than 140 years of local porcelain history. Exhibits and demonstration pieces illustrate the various stages of production. The focus is therefore not only on the history of the material, but also on how it is made. The Porzellaneum’s on-site facilities include a shop and café, as well as access with reduced barriers and museum education programs.

Visitors of all ages can decorate porcelain in the painting studio; advance registration is required. You can also make your own porcelain. The exhibitions and hands-on activities offer different ways to explore the subject: learn about the history and production process, or get creative yourself. If you are planning a visit with children, the age information for the painting studio is a useful guide; be sure to register in advance.

Museum and Traces of the Town’s History

The Annaburg Amtshaus Museum brings together themes from different eras and areas of life. It covers the military institute for the education of boys and the non-commissioned officers’ preparatory school, as well as forestry and the seed-drying facility. An internment camp for Indian prisoners of war is also among the museum’s topics. Other exhibits include a historic classroom and everyday objects from the 18th to the 20th century. Institutions, forestry, wartime and everyday life are presented side by side, offering different perspectives on Annaburg’s history.

In the marketplace, the Michael Stifel Fountain commemorates the mathematician and pastor Michael Stifel and his failed prediction of the end of the world in 1533. Built in 1897, the Annaburg seed-drying facility survives as a historic testament to forestry and forest science; it is considered one of the oldest facilities of its kind in Central Germany.

Wildlife Park and Paths Through Nature

The town-center wildlife park is a designated nature conservation area and the surviving wooded remnant of a former princely hunting garden associated with Annaburg Palace. The Thiergarten Annaburg nature conservation area borders Annaburg’s southern urban area directly and includes the Kleiner Tiergarten, an old broadleaf forest with burial mounds. The Kleiner Tiergarten has improved paths, rest areas and information boards, giving it the character of a small nature trail.

The Zweistromweg runs alongside the wildlife park and offers paths through oak woodland for quiet recreation. The green spaces have distinct features: the nature trail in the Kleiner Tiergarten is shaped by broadleaf woodland, rest areas and information boards, while the Zweistromweg focuses on oak woodland and peaceful walking.

Choose Your Stay Based on Your Interests

When looking for places to stay, the kind of day you have in mind can be a helpful starting point: would you like historic buildings and museum exhibits to shape your stay, porcelain to explore and decorate, or paths through nature? Annaburg offers different themes to focus on, depending on the purpose of your trip.
