Dorfchemnitz combines expansive views across the Erzgebirge with a variety of themes: technology and church history sit alongside forests, wood art and signposted trails. The village lies in a valley flanked by hills reaching heights of around 650 metres. This allows visitors to explore different aspects of the destination without any one theme having to define the entire trip.

Technology History and Wood Art

The Eisenhammer Technical Museum showcases a historic, water-powered hammer mill associated with iron ore mining in the Erzgebirge. The site also includes a local history room and a chair factory with its original machinery. This brings together three distinct aspects in one place: the historic hammer mill, local history and chair-making.

Blockhausen is associated with Dorfchemnitz as a forest and wood experience centre and is a destination for forestry excursions. Its exhibition features wooden sculptures created by chainsaw artists from around the world. The mixed forest there consists of beech, maple, Douglas fir and silver fir; Blockhausen is also home to the world’s longest table. Together, the sculptures, tree species and table offer a distinctive perspective on wood as a material and its artistic possibilities. The programme includes cultural events such as cabaret and historic tractor gatherings, as well as chainsaw carving courses for beginners and advanced participants. The programme may change, so check the dates in advance.

Church History Across Several Periods

The church in Dorfchemnitz offers another historical highlight. The first records date from around 1550, during the Reformation. Its present form dates from 1802 to 1804; the tower, around 40 metres high, had already taken its current shape by 1705. The organ adds another chapter to this timeline: Johann Christian Kaiser built it in 1803, and Karl Gottlieb Jehmlich moved it to the gallery in 1834. The first records, the tower’s design, the church’s present form and the organ’s history thus mark different stages.

Landscape, Trails and Getting Around

Dorfchemnitz has signposted cycling and hiking trail networks, as well as a network of bridleways. This offers a choice of activities: cycling and hiking on the one hand, and trail riding on the other. The expansive views across the Erzgebirge and the elevations of up to around 650 metres also describe the valley’s natural setting.
