Hohendubrau combines striking natural features with village history and a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors. In Groß Radisch, cherry tree avenues line the southern slope of the Hohe Dubrau; in Dauban, forests, meadows and ponds shape the nature experiences on offer. Historic churches, a memorial and special attractions in the different villages give your trip further points of interest.

Hiking and Discovering Nature

The Hohe Dubrau hiking area near Hohendubrau includes the 293-metre-high Monumentberg, a restaurant, an observation tower and a children’s playground. The tower is open from 1 April to 31 October, between 7 am and 8 pm. It is closed from 1 November to 31 March, except by arrangement. It must not be climbed during storms, thunderstorms, hail or severe icing. If you plan to visit the restaurant, it is advisable to check its current availability in advance.

Groß Radisch lies on the southern slope of the Hohe Dubrau. An easy circular route starts there and runs for 2.7 kilometres along forest paths beside streams. Groß Radisch is seven minutes from the motorway. The hiking route and travel information give you concrete points of reference for planning, without requiring you to infer a walking time for the circular route.

In the Daubaner Wald, a natural heritage area in the Dauban district of Hohendubrau, you will find an orchid meadow, wild gladioli and several ponds. The area is part of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve. Hiking trails run around the former elk enclosure; today, wild horses live there. In Dauban, plants, bodies of water and forest trails thus sit alongside the transition from the former use as an enclosure to today’s animal husbandry.

Village History and Special Places

The cherry tree avenues in Groß Radisch are more than 200 years old and are regarded as a traditional part of the village’s cultural heritage. The well-maintained avenues invite you to stroll and linger. Also in Groß Radisch is the white Protestant church, built in 1802. A monument to Johann Carl Adolf von Nostitz was erected there in 1801. The avenues, church and monument offer different ways to explore the village’s history—through its evolved cultural landscape, as well as through its architecture and commemorations.

In Thräna, you will find a wildlife enclosure, a children’s playground, a Gaudi Golf course and a wildlife hut. The long tradition of beekeeping and fishing is also part of the village’s character. The former forestry office in Thräna is a historic building. In Jerchwitz, there is an alpaca and horse farm, considered a popular destination for animal lovers and children.

Weigersdorf also combines history with contemporary community life. The St. Trinity congregation was founded in 1843, and its church was built in 1846. The congregation holds services on Sundays and offers activities for children and adults; exact dates may vary. If you are interested in village history, you can explore the church building and today’s community life here in their respective historical contexts.

Choose a Base for Your Trip Based on Your Interests

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your trip: hiking and views at Monumentberg, natural features and trails in Dauban, or cherry tree avenues and village history in Groß Radisch. Thräna and Jerchwitz add leisure activities and encounters with animals, while Weigersdorf offers religious history and community activities. Plan the rest of your trip around the places that interest you most, and check opening hours or event dates when making specific plans.
