Vierkirchen combines a hilly, partly wooded landscape with church art, historic buildings and routes through several villages. Arnsdorf lies on the western edge of the Königshain Hills. In Buchholz, a walk west of the village follows a stream and links three ponds. This offers different ways to discover the landscape—from the streamside path to the churches and historic buildings of the municipality.

Landscape and routes around Arnsdorf and Buchholz

Several waterways cross Vierkirchen’s hilly landscape. The castle park in Buchholz, with its old deciduous trees, is a destination in its own right. West of Buchholz, a walk alongside a stream links three ponds; the sequence of water and path gives this outing a clear route, without assuming a specific walking time.

To explore the parishes, you can use paved roads, cycle paths, footpaths and the Way of St. James. If you prefer planning specific stages rather than individual walks, the pilgrimage route also offers fixed points for orientation. The different types of routes and the landscape allow for a range of focuses, while the historic sites add to your impressions of the villages.

Historic churches with special features

The church in Arnsdorf is a Late Romanesque hall church, founded in 1251. Inside, different centuries come together: the painted wooden ceiling dates from the 16th century, the crucifix from the 15th century and the Heinze organ from the 19th century. Its features make the church interior interesting to visitors with an interest in painting, sculpture and the history of organs.

The church in Melaune also reflects several phases of construction. The present building resulted from a major renovation in 1845. Behind the altar is a 1698 epitaph for Carl Gottlob von Nostitz. The churches in Arnsdorf, Buchholz, Melaune, Tetta, Nieder Seifersdorf, Diehsa and Jänkendorf are generally open from Easter until the Sunday before Advent, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Check opening information before your visit.

Buildings and village culture

A castle was built in Arnsdorf in 1856. The former garden pavilion is known as a two-storey Baroque building with a mansard roof; it was restored in 2001. The stump of a Dutch-style windmill also survives east of the church. Together with the Arnsdorf rectory, an approximately 200-year-old three-sided farmstead, these sites offer further insight into the village’s architectural history. The rectory is used for pilgrim accommodation and community gatherings.

The Landkino hosts film screenings and other events in a former barn. As the programme may change, check current dates before visiting. In Melaune, the former rectory houses a pilgrims’ hostel; the youth barn offers recreational activities for children and young people. Check access to these facilities in advance.

Stages and overnight stays on the pilgrimage route

The Ecumenical Pilgrimage Route from Görlitz to Vacha passes through the parishes of Arnsdorf, Melaune and Buchholz, which offer pilgrims’ hostels all year round. The stages are 18.5 kilometres to Arnsdorf, then 4.5 kilometres to Melaune and a further 4.5 kilometres to the overnight accommodation in the rebuilt Old School.

Check distances against the current route markers and confirm hostel availability in advance. If you are looking for accommodation for a pilgrimage stage, the individual stops and designated overnight locations are a useful starting point for planning. For a visit focused on churches and architectural history, Arnsdorf and Melaune offer different historic features; Buchholz adds the castle park and the path beside the three ponds to your stay.
