Bernsdorf
Accommodation in Bernsdorf
Bernsdorf combines a forest swimming pool set in a protected pond landscape with green spaces in the town center and local architectural history. The Bernsdorf forest swimming pool is located within the Bernsdorf Pond Landscape Conservation Area. It is a natural swimming facility created from a former glass sand pit, offering opportunities for recreation and relaxation. The Frog Cycling Route crosses the grounds of the forest swimming pool. Here, water and cycling come together in one specific place.
Green Spaces and Places for Leisure
Another highlight is August-Bebel-Park, a recreational green space in the center of Bernsdorf. It borders a wet meadow and Schmelzteich pond. Seating and an observation platform have been installed at Schmelzteich pond. The Bernsdorf animal enclosure is located on Parkstraße, within the park. Lighting has been installed along the Frog Cycling Route by the animal enclosure, and the park has been modernized along the Frog Cycling Route. Paths around the animal enclosure and Schmelzteich pond were given a Saxon gravel surface. The former tree trail in Bernsdorf has also been improved. The Bike & Chill pump track is another local place for leisure.
Museum and Local History
The Zeißholz Village Museum is located in one of the oldest surviving three-sided farmsteads in Upper Lusatia. As a museum site, the three-sided farmstead also draws attention to this type of farm architecture. Since 1897, Bernsdorf Catholic Church has been the center of the town’s Catholic community; the same building also served as a schoolhouse in the last century. The Protestant church, with its war memorial, is also a notable building. The two churches stand out in different ways: the Catholic church combines its role as a community center with its former use as a school, while the war memorial is a distinctive feature of the Protestant church.
Cycling Locally and in the Region
Bernsdorf’s developed cycling paths pass through forests and along numerous lakes. The Frog Cycling Route crosses the grounds of the forest swimming pool and runs alongside the animal enclosure. Bernsdorf is also connected to the Lusatian Lakeland. The region offers routes such as the Lakeland Route and the Lower Lusatian Mining Tour, swimming lakes, water sports, museums and viewpoints; themed day routes are 20 to 60 kilometers long.
In the broader Bautzen District destination
The broader Bautzen District destination also offers independent cycling tours. The Bautzen North Tour is a 43.1-kilometer circular route from Bautzen via Quatitz, Großdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz, returning to Bautzen. It passes through the heath and pond landscape and along the nature trail in Crosta. The Hills and Valleys Route is a regional circular tour through the West Lusatian Hills in Bautzen District. The Krabat Cycling Route is also a regional circular tour in Bautzen District and follows in the footsteps of Krabat, the hero of Sorbian legend. These examples showcase different types of tours: a loop with a specific distance and places along the way, and routes shaped by the landscape or a cultural figure.
