Discover Roßwein: Culture, Water and History
Accommodation in Roßwein
Roßwein combines culture, swimming and outdoor activities with sights rooted in the town’s history and mining past. A camellia more than 200 years old adds an unusual botanical highlight; there are also museums, two different swimming options and routes along the Freiberger Mulde. You can shape your stay around history, water and active pursuits.
Sights with a range of highlights
Other sights in Roßwein include remains of the old town wall, a post-mile column, the former post office and old silver mine tunnels. The selection brings together town history, postal connections and mining, alongside the botanical distinction of the camellia. Roßwein thus offers a range of themes rather than letting just one aspect define your stay.
Museums, technology and swimming
The local history museum, a fire brigade museum and the Alte Schmiede Littdorf Museum each offer a different cultural focus. A working steam engine is also on display. The museums are not open continuously; access may be limited to special events, or you may need to arrange a guided tour in advance. If you are planning a museum visit, check the arrangements for each one beforehand.
For a different kind of day out, there is an outdoor adventure pool in Wolfstal and an indoor pool. Together, the two swimming options offer opportunities in different seasons. As opening hours vary with the season, it is best to check the details before your visit.
On foot and by bike
Near Roßwein, there are routes for walks and cycling on both sides of the Freiberger Mulde. The Muldental Cycle Route runs between Freiberg and Leipzig. This means your trip can include both riverside routes near Roßwein and a cycle route that links these two cities.
More to discover in the wider Mittelsachsen destination
The wider Mittelsachsen destination offers further cultural attractions. Schloss Rochsburg has housed a museum since 1911; the “Leute machen Kleider” (“People Make Clothes”) exhibition presents 52 costumes spanning 1,000 years of European fashion history. In Freiberg, the terra mineralia exhibition at Schloss Freudenstein displays more than 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites. Schloss Rochlitz offers guided interactive experiences exploring the history of the castle and its residents over several centuries. Important for planning: Schloss Rochlitz is not fully accessible without architectural barriers, although some highlights can be explored with just a few steps.
Mittelsachsen also offers a variety of landscapes and outdoor activities. The 353-metre-high Rochlitzer Berg is a remnant of volcanic activity; its red porphyry tuff is considered unique in Germany and Europe. The Porphyrland Geopark is ideal for hiking and cycling, and sailing is possible on the Kriebstein Reservoir. Underground tours at the “Reiche Zeche” teaching mine begin with a shaft descent, usually via the “Reiche Zeche” shaft. The cage reaches the shaft station at a depth of around 150 metres. The Mittelsächsischer Kultursommer is an annual, three-month summer festival with more than 40 events across Mittelsachsen; programmes vary.
