Dahlen is the southern gateway to the Dahlener Heide. In the town, a late Baroque castle complex, church art featuring a large-scale fresco of Saint Christopher, and a historic town centre come together. This offers several ways to shape a stay: a focus on the landscape, architectural and peace history, or special details in the castle park. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore Dahlen or also take in the greater variety of landscapes in northern Saxony.

Castle history and a distinctive park tree

Dahlen Castle is a late Baroque castle complex commissioned by Count Heinrich von Bünau in the mid-18th century. The town is also associated with an event in European history: in 1763, Frederick II signed the Peace of Hubertusburg at Dahlen Castle on behalf of Prussia. The complex therefore represents more than a single architectural period.

Tours of Dahlen Castle are available by prior arrangement; please coordinate your visit in advance. Saxony’s oldest tulip tree stands in the castle park. The park adds a striking natural feature to the castle’s history, without requiring you to plan an additional activity.

Church art and the historic town centre

The Late Gothic Church of Our Lady has a history spanning more than 500 years. Dahlen’s town church also contains a 35-square-metre fresco of Saint Christopher. Together, these details show how Dahlen’s historic architecture and a large-scale work of art can be viewed as distinct aspects of the town’s history.

The adjoining townhouses also shape the town centre, giving it the historic character of a former farming town. For those interested in how a town has developed, the townscape offers another way to explore Dahlen’s history, alongside the castle and churches.

Heathland and cycling route

Dahlen is known as the southern gateway to the Dahlener Heide. The Leipzig–Elbe Cycle Route also passes through the town. Its 24-kilometre section in northern Saxony forms part of the route through Leipzig, Brandis, Wurzen, Lossatal and Schirmenitz; Dahlen lies between Lossatal and Schirmenitz. Check route conditions before setting off.

Getting to the castle

If you arrive on the RE 50 train towards Dresden, Dahlen station is about an 850-metre walk from the castle. Check transport connections and access details before you travel. This information, together with the option of tours by prior arrangement, can help you plan your visit to the castle.

Northern Saxony as a wider setting

The wider destination of northern Saxony offers a variety of landscapes: the district includes Dübener Heide Nature Park, the Dahlener Heide, Wermsdorfer Wald, and the river landscapes along the Elbe and Mulde. Northern Saxony has a well-developed, signposted network of hiking and cycling routes; cycling, hiking and sailing are among the options for active leisure.

A lake landscape in northern Saxony, created from former open-cast mines, also offers the opportunity to try water skiing. This regional perspective complements, but does not replace, Dahlen’s own appeal: here, Dahlen is defined by its castle and church history, historic town centre and location at the southern gateway to the Dahlener Heide.
