St. Catherine’s Church gives Naundorf a distinctive cultural and historical character: its Gothic ground-plan features, Baroque redesign and later works of art offer different ways to explore architectural and church history. The church also hosts cultural events, and the Döllnitz Railway stops in Naundorf. Visitors interested in architecture, religious art or cultural events will find specific topics here to help plan their trip.

St. Catherine’s Church: Building History and Organ

Between 1742 and 1744, St. Catherine’s Church was completely redesigned in the Baroque style. At the same time, its surviving enclosing walls retain a typical Gothic ground plan, with a long nave and a hexagonal eastern end. Baroque redesign and Gothic ground-plan features thus coexist in the same church. Its building history cannot therefore be reduced to a single architectural style.

The pneumatic Jehmlich organ, dating from 1907, adds another layer of history. Inside, the pulpit altar forms the visual focal point. Following Naundorf’s anniversary celebrations in 1993, the church was renovated inside and out in accordance with heritage conservation principles, according to the church.

Chapels, Windows and Events

The former manor chapels are located on the north side of the church and are associated with the estates of Naundorf, Leuben and Casabra. Today, some of the chapels are used as archive rooms; valuable Baroque stoves have also been preserved there. A stained-glass window in the southeastern altar area dates from the 1896 renovation and depicts the risen Christ. Along with the pulpit altar and organ, these details give the church interior a variety of architectural and artistic accents.

St. Catherine’s Church also hosts concerts and talks. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check the dates in advance. This lets you combine an interest in the building’s history with a possible cultural event without assuming that a particular date is scheduled.

Hof and the Jahnatal Cycle Route

The Hof palace and park complex includes a Renaissance palace, a Baroque palace and a park. The Hof local history association runs a local history room in an outbuilding of the palace complex. The estate lies directly on the Jahnatal Cycle Route, making it a cultural point of interest along the route.

The 27-kilometre Jahnatal Cycle Route runs from Baderitz, near Zschaitz, via Hof to Riesa, following the Jahna through a floodplain landscape. It runs mostly along separate cycle and footpaths and is considered a route with no significant climbs. It is also considered particularly suitable for families with children. White-and-green signposts bearing the words “Jahnatalradweg” mark the route. Its total length, the route characteristics described and its signage provide different points of reference for planning a cycling trip.
