Oschatz combines an impressive history of towers with leisure activities and a historic narrow-gauge railway. This offers a variety of experiences to consider when planning a trip: views from a former tower keeper’s apartment, games and animals at O-Schatz-Park, swimming and sauna facilities, and a ride on the “Wilder Robert.”

Oschatz: Tower History and Leisure

The historic tower keeper’s apartment is located in the southern spire of St. Aegidien Church. The visit involves climbing 199 steps and combines a glimpse into the former life of the tower keeper’s family with views across the Oschatz countryside. This makes the climb a special way to explore the city’s history—and a clear contrast to the activities on the ground.

O-Schatz-Park is a family-oriented leisure area on the former state horticultural show grounds. Animals, a maze, miniature golf and a playground are among its attractions; admission is free. Families travelling with children can include several activities in their day’s plans at one location rather than committing to just one activity.

Platsch offers a 25-metre pool, a paddling area for toddlers and an Aquacross course. There is also a sauna village with indoor and outdoor saunas, as well as an adventure bowling lane for children. As individual facilities and their availability may change, check the latest information before your visit.

The railway adds another distinctive experience. Historic narrow-gauge railway rides on the “Wilder Robert,” also known as the Döllnitzbahn, start at Oschatz station and run via Thalheim, Naundorf and Mügeln to Glossen. The route has a clear direction of travel; check operating days and timetables when making specific plans.

More perspectives on the broader destination of Northern Saxony

Beyond Oschatz, the broader destination of Northern Saxony offers further landscape and cultural attractions. The district includes Dübener Heide Nature Park, Dahlener Heide and Wermsdorf Forest, as well as the river landscapes along the Elbe and Mulde. A well-developed, signposted network of hiking and cycling trails complements these landscapes. Cycling, hiking and sailing are among the region’s leisure activities; water skiing is also available on the lake landscape formed by former open-cast mines. The approximately 67-kilometre Orchard Route runs for 21 kilometres through the district of Northern Saxony.

The region’s cultural attractions also offer a range of different highlights. In Torgau, the chapel at Hartenfels Castle was inaugurated by Martin Luther on 5 October 1544 with a festive sermon, making it the world’s first and only church building of its kind. At the same castle, the Great Wendelstein is a striking example of the Early Renaissance: the 28.2-metre-high spiral staircase tower is considered unique in the world for its daring design and is described as an architectural masterpiece of the era.

In Bad Düben, the Landscape Museum at Düben Castle has been housed within the castle walls since 1953. Its permanent exhibition comprises eleven newly designed rooms devoted to the cultural landscape of Dübener Heide shaped by human activity. Bad Düben’s spa gardens were established in 1846 as one of Germany’s first public parks. In Wermsdorf, a local history trail links important sites in the town’s history, running from the Old Hunting Lodge along Schlossstraße to Hubertusburg Palace.

In Mügeln, the Mügeln Station Geoportal—Kaolin Experience Centre explores the history of kaolin mining. As a visitor and information centre, it displays photographs, original mining equipment, kaolin objects, information panels and terminals. The “Railway” experience centre in Mügeln covers topics ranging from the broad-gauge railway in Oschatz to model railways. The milling region, meanwhile, is associated with the traditional millers’ greeting “Glück zu”: visitors are personally welcomed by the master miller and introduced to the traditional craft of milling.
