Muldenhammer brings together distinctive natural and cultural themes: the Am alten Floßgraben FFH area is known for its spruce bogs and montane spruce forests, while Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz stands out for its German Space Travel Exhibition and historic bell-founding tradition. Circular trails wind through forest areas, along streams and mountain meadows; another circular route includes swimming spots at Vogtlandsee. The area’s attractions range from moorland landscapes to the history of space travel and mining.

Nature between moorland and spruce forest

Muldenhammer includes the Am alten Floßgraben FFH area: an enclave of near-natural spruce forests with former peat-cutting areas and small regeneration zones, surrounded by near-natural spruce bogs and montane spruce forests. The former peat-cutting sites also make the area’s connection to moorland visible as part of its landscape history; at the same time, the different spruce forest and moorland habitats shape the area.

The Am alten Torfstich moorland nature trail is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and passes through the Am alten FloĂźgraben and Muldenwiesen protected areas. A free forest car park is located on Lehmgrubenweg in Muldenhammer, in the district of FriedrichsgrĂĽn, near the trail entrance. Check parking availability before setting out.

The Waldgebiet circular trail connects Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz and Tannenbergsthal along a forest-dominated route. It passes through Saxony’s largest contiguous forest area and through the 230-year-old spruce stand in the Drei Bächel natural forest reserve. Quiet ponds, flowing streams and colourful mountain meadows are also among the landscapes along the trail.

The circular route to Vogtlandsee offers a different distance: it is 11.5 kilometres long and runs almost entirely along forest paths. Its stated length clearly distinguishes it from the approximately 2.5-kilometre moorland nature trail. Vogtlandsee has swimming spots, and the route also passes a large playground in GrĂĽnheide Forest Park. Access to the water and facilities may vary by season, as may trail conditions.

Space travel, bell founding and mining history

The German Space Travel Exhibition is located in Muldenhammer, in the district of Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz. It displays original spacesuits and research equipment and highlights the flight of Dr Sigmund Jähn, Germany’s first cosmonaut. Its themes range from early space travel and international space stations to planned missions to the Moon and Mars. The exhibition content may continue to evolve.

The Rautenkranz circular hiking trail starts at the car park of the German Space Travel Exhibition. Offering views towards the settlement, it passes Cottafelsen and a fallow deer enclosure. The route thus combines views of the surrounding area with a clearly marked hiking trail.

Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz is also shaped by its historic iron art casting tradition, which produced more than 9,000 church bells. Guided tours at the Grube Tannenberg visitor mine offer another perspective on regional history, covering Vogtland’s mining history from the 16th to the 20th century.
