Neuensalz shares the recreation area around the Pöhl Reservoir with the municipality of Pöhl. The district of Altensalz lies directly beside the reservoir. Below the Neuensalz settlement is the Neuensalz forebay, where the Rabenbach is dammed. The landscape also has a history that now lies beneath the water’s surface: the salt springs that gave Altensalz and Neuensalz their names are now submerged beneath the waters of the Pöhl Reservoir.

Enjoy the water and explore the outdoors

The Pöhl Reservoir offers opportunities for surfing, sailing, swimming, boating and pedal boating. Activities may vary seasonally. The sailing area covers more than four square kilometres and is suitable for beginners as well as experienced sailors; sailing is also seasonal. When planning, you can choose from various water-based activities, but should take the relevant season into account.

If you would rather explore the landscape from the shore, the reservoir circular hiking trail offers a longer walking option. It is approximately 20 kilometres long, runs through meadows and forests, and offers views of the Pöhl Reservoir. Another way to experience the waterscape is to walk along the dam crests of the Neuensalz and Thoßfell forebays. Boat tours also offer views of both forebays. As routes may change, it is worth checking the current route before setting off. Conditions on the circular trail can also change, so check for current information before you start.

Chapel, organs and castle ruins

Neuensalz Chapel brings together several chapters of local history. It served as a manor chapel and was first mentioned in a document in 1529. It was rebuilt between 1981 and 1987. Today it serves as a concert and exhibition centre and has a Jehmlich organ from Dresden, built in 1993. Its distinctive acoustics complement its cultural use. If you would like to combine your visit with a concert or exhibition, it is best to check the current programme, as individual events may change.

Altensalz Church also has particular points of interest for culture enthusiasts: it has a Gothic wooden ceiling with Baroque ornamentation dating from around 1660. Its Eule organ was built in 1909 and installed in 1910. In Mechelgrün, a district of Neuensalz, you can also visit the ruins of Mechelgrün Water Castle. The castle was built in the 13th century. Together, the chapel, church and castle ruins show different aspects of the region’s architectural and local history, whose stories are not confined to a single era.

Which focus suits your trip?

If you would like to combine different activities, bear their varying conditions in mind—for example, the seasonal availability of water-based activities and the approximate length of the circular hiking trail.
