Syrau combines village history, milling technology and the underground world of the Dragon’s Cave with a signposted trail into the countryside. The church marks the old village centre; the windmill is a technical landmark of the Vogtland, while the Dragon’s Cave draws your gaze underground. The Dragon Trail adds an active element: its length, elevation gain and trail conditions are specified. This lets you explore Syrau according to the aspect that interests you most, rather than combining every experience into a single itinerary.

Village History and Milling Technology

The church that marks Syrau’s old village centre was built mainly between 1686 and 1689. Its construction period anchors part of the village’s history to a specific place and a clearly defined time. The Syrau Windmill offers a different perspective on history: it is the last surviving tower Dutch windmill in the Vogtland. Its wooden workings and gear train include components of, in some cases, immense dimensions. Here, design and mechanics go hand in hand; the mill can therefore be viewed both as a distinctive type of mill and as an example of large-scale craftsmanship.

The Dragon’s Cave Underground

The Syrau Dragon’s Cave was discovered in 1928 during quarrying and is Saxony’s only show cave. Its varied features include stalactites and stalagmites, crystal-clear lakes and halls shaped by water. These different formations draw the eye from individual cave formations to larger underground chambers. The route down into the cave has 330 steps; it lies about 16 metres underground and has a temperature of 10°C. The steps, depth and temperature give you specific points to consider when planning. At 10°C, it is a good idea to bring clothing suitable for a cool environment.

On the Dragon Trail

The signposted Dragon Trail is 10.6 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of around 100 metres. It runs along country roads and forest paths and is also suitable for cycling. You can plan the circuit as an outdoor activity and choose between walking and cycling. The route length provides a specific planning figure, while the approximate elevation gain offers a second point of reference. The types of paths mentioned also describe the route’s character more precisely than a distance alone.

Choose the Focus of Your Trip

When looking for accommodation in Syrau, the focus of your trip can be a good starting point. The Dragon Trail offers an active time outdoors; the cave combines natural formations with steps and cool temperatures; the church and windmill offer insights into local history and technology. These are different highlights to weigh up as you plan. If you are travelling with several interests in mind, consider whether you want to focus on outdoor activities, the underground world of the cave, or history and milling technology.
