Hillgroven – Marsh Fields and Water Management
Accommodation in Hillgroven
Hillgroven is a settlement in the Wesselburen Marsh, with homes spread across the area. Grain, rapeseed, cabbage, potatoes and sugar beet characterise the fields surrounding the village. This mix brings the agricultural character of the marsh to life: different crops shape the landscape under cultivation. When planning your trip, Hillgroven is therefore a destination whose character is shaped by its scattered settlement pattern and rural surroundings.
Water Management in the Marsh
The Hillgroven pumping station was built in 1972 during a dike reinforcement project as an outer-dike sluice. It is located in Wesselburenerkoog, near Koogweg. As a specific point of interest, the pumping station brings the history of water management in the marsh to life: its construction year, function and connection to the dike reinforcement all come together here.
The Eider Barrage is located near Hillgroven and is a popular destination for excursions in the Wesselburen area. The 230-metre-long engineering structure was built to protect the Eider estuary from storm surges from the North Sea and to ensure drainage in the Eider region. A road tunnel runs through the barrage, connecting Wesselburenerkoog with the Eiderstedt Peninsula. The area thus offers both a historic pumping station and a large-scale example of coastal protection and drainage.
Tides and Nature in the Region
Across the wider Wesselburen area, the horizon changes with the tides. The view can also look different at the same time on consecutive days. This changing scene gives the landscape a rhythm shaped by time, unlike the fields and structures that remain in view.
The Eider estuary also shapes the region’s natural environment: around 620 hectares are protected to safeguard characteristic plants and animals. The estuary is also an internationally significant wetland and a refuge for species on the Red List.
In the wider travel destination of Dithmarschen, the Wadden Sea offers a broader perspective on the region’s natural environment. Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park is one of Germany’s 14 national parks and the largest between the North Cape and Sicily. The Wadden Sea is considered one of Europe’s most bird-rich areas. The salt marshes are home to hundreds of plant and animal species found only in this habitat.
Culture, Activities and Accommodation
Dithmarschen offers a range of destinations for other interests. The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen history, from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, lighting fires and baking bread; the programme may vary. Guided mudflat walks on the Dithmarschen coast are led by National Park mudflat guides with local knowledge and expertise. At low tide, the rich life of the Wadden Sea becomes visible; tides and tour dates may vary.
