Between marsh, geest and missionary history

Breklum lies at the transition between marsh and geest and is characterised by its old trees. This landscape setting meets a distinctive cultural history: the Breklum Mission and encounters between churches from different parts of the world are among the topics that offer a closer look at the town. When planning your trip, you can explore both the landscape and the history of Breklum.

The One World Exhibition is housed in the former mission rectory. It focuses on the town’s missionary history and intercultural encounters between churches in the Global North and South. One historic milestone is the year 1876, when Pastor Christian Jensen founded the Schleswig-Holstein Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society in Breklum.

The Christian Jensen Kolleg is also located in Breklum. It is an ecumenical conference and meeting centre. The campus includes seminar and guest rooms, common rooms, dining rooms, a café and administrative offices. The complex is set in a large garden beside a small patch of woodland. The Kolleg and the exhibition offer different perspectives on encounters: the history of the mission on the one hand, and a contemporary venue for conferences and gatherings on the other.

Church, tours and discoveries in the area

From Easter until harvest time, Breklum Church is open to visitors for sightseeing and prayer; tours of the church, tower and bells are also offered during this period. Tower and bell tours are available by prior arrangement. They take you up the 55-metre-high tower, offer a view from above and include a visit to the bell chamber. Before your trip, check seasonal visiting hours and how to book a tour.

Another place to explore is nearby Bredstedt: the Mittleres Nordfriesland Nature Centre offers exhibitions, activities in its environmental laboratory, illustrated lectures and craft activities. This complements Breklum’s cultural and historical attractions with nature and environmental activities. Depending on your interests, you can combine your stay with a visit to the exhibition, a church tour or a trip to the nature centre.

Breklum as a base

Breklum is on the B 5 coastal road and the Hamburg–Westerland railway line. The nearby North Sea, bathing beaches and Wadden Sea can be reached by bicycle or car. The islands and Halligen are also accessible via the ferry ports of Nordstrand, Schlüttsiel and Dagebüll. The transport connections offer various ways to plan your stay, without requiring every outing to have the same focus.

When choosing accommodation in Breklum, you can first consider what matters most for your trip: the town’s history and church, or excursions towards the coast and Wadden Sea. If you’re visiting the islands and Halligen, ferry connections are part of your planning; check ferry timetables and services before your trip. This way, you can choose where to stay based on the experiences you actually want.

North Frisia as a wider travel destination

The wider North Frisia travel region extends far beyond Breklum. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum; North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen in the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

The Schlüttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, the tour continues along the sea dike. Excursion boats also leave from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as the seal banks. For a regional treat, Pharisäer—a hot coffee with rum and a topping of whipped cream—is one of the classic specialities of northern North Frisia.
