Dyke history, the long-established Pharisäerhof and a cycling tour through historic polders give Elisabeth-Sophien-Koog its distinctive character. There is also a bathing area by the dyke and overnight accommodation at the campsite. This gives you the choice of focusing your stay on local history, cycling or a swimming break.

Dyke history and coastal protection

The area of Elisabeth-Sophien-Koog was diked in 1739 as Christianskoog and destroyed by a storm surge in 1751. From 1771, a dyke around 6.3 kilometres long protected nearly 480 hectares of land. Also in 1771, a lower dyke profile was used in Elisabeth-Sophien-Koog to improve wave dissipation. These historic milestones trace the development of coastal protection from the land reclamation and the storm surge onwards.

Pharisäerhof: local history and a speciality

The historic Pharisäerhof was established in 1872 and has remained in the same family for generations. It houses a small local history museum and a café. The farm is considered the historically documented birthplace of the North Frisian Pharisäer; this coffee speciality is also on the café’s menu. If you would like to visit the museum or café, check current access arrangements before travelling.

The Pharisäerhof also has a farm shop selling Nordstrand specialities and handicrafts. The range may change. Alongside its focus on history, there are therefore two other reasons to visit: local history at the museum and regional products at the farm shop.

Cycling through the historic polders

An easy 30.4-kilometre cycling tour through Nordstrand’s seven historic polders also passes through Elisabeth-Sophien-Koog. Along the way, the focus is on the history of land reclamation, storm surges and coastal protection. The tour places the dyke’s history in a broader regional context and offers a practical way to explore the polders by bike.

Swimming and staying overnight at Camping Nordstrand

The “Oben” bathing area is right beside the dyke at Camping Nordstrand in Elisabeth-Sophien-Koog. There is an outdoor shower, and beach chairs are available seasonally. As facilities may change with the season, check what is currently available before your visit.

Camping Nordstrand offers overnight stays in camping barrels and camping pods for two to four people. Availability and terms may change; check for your chosen dates. The campsite is also home to the Smutjes Lütte Kombüse bistro, which serves freshly prepared food to campers and day visitors. If you plan to visit the bistro, check in advance that it is open.

Another nearby option is the bathing area at Holmer Siel, which is especially popular with surfers. Conditions and access may vary. The bathing areas therefore offer different experiences: the “Oben” bathing area is right by the dyke at Camping Nordstrand, while the nearby bathing area at Holmer Siel is especially popular with surfers.
