Heist between the Elbe Marshes and the Geest
Accommodation in Heist
Heist lies between the Elbe Marshes and the Geest. Agriculture and tree nurseries shape the landscape; walks in Heistmer Forest, a high ropes course and Uetersen/Heist airfield add a variety of highlights. This makes it possible to get to know the area through both its landscape and its different opportunities for active exploration.
Moorland, marsh and forest
Heist’s landscape is considered to be shaped by agriculture and tree nurseries. One specific natural area is the Tävsmoor/Haselauer Moor Nature Reserve. It lies between Appen and Heist, south of Uetersen airfield. The southern part of Haselauer Moor drains into the Elbe Marshes via the Holmau, also known as the Happelbach. Moorland, stream and marshes are therefore distinct yet interconnected natural features of the area.
Walks in Heistmer Forest are also among the experiences associated with Heist. Together with its location between the Elbe Marshes and the Geest, they provide a landscape setting in which forest and moorland reveal different sides of the surroundings. If you are mainly thinking of walks and nature when planning your trip, you will find specific features here to guide your own explorations.
High ropes course with different heights
The Heist high ropes course is a forest course with suspended obstacles several metres above the ground. The courses run at different heights, including lower sections for visitors who prefer an experience that is less focused on heights. The range of heights is an important distinction within the offering and helps you decide whether it suits your interests before visiting.
Walks in Heistmer Forest and the high ropes course offer different ways to spend time outdoors. The course adds an active element to the picture of a trip to Heist, while the forest is associated with walks. If you are looking for an active activity, you can treat the course as a highlight in its own right rather than equating it with a leisurely walk.
Airfield and views from above
Uetersen/Heist airfield is associated with powered-aircraft and gliding clubs, flight schools, charter companies and private aircraft owners. The municipality also promotes sightseeing flights from the local airfield, offering views towards the nearby marshes and the Elbe. This adds a possible view of the landscape from the air to the perspective from the ground.
The airfield can be visited by plane, car, bicycle or on foot. For cyclists coming from Heist, signs point the way to Uetersen/Heist airfield. This is separate arrival information and is independent of the bus journey to the high ropes course.
Getting there and finding your way
For travelling by bus to the high ropes course, route 489 connects Wedel, Heist, Uetersen and Elmshorn. Get off at the Heist/Rosentwiete stop to reach the course. From there, it is about a 200-metre walk towards the B 431. Check the current timetable before travelling and follow the signs on site.
Outside the town, an Ochsenweg information board for Heist is located at the junction of Haseldorfer Straße and Wischweg. It provides a specific point of reference if you are including this part of the area in your plans. When choosing accommodation, consider whether walks in the forest, the high ropes course or the airfield match your travel interests.
