Discover Kölln-Reisiek: Krückau trails, herons and farm history
Accommodation in Kölln-Reisiek
Kölln-Reisiek can be explored through several specific themes: paths through green spaces, the Krückau and a historic farm complex at Dorfstraße 3. Other highlights include the heron as the town’s heraldic animal and the cultivation of vegetables and strawberries at Köllner Hof. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can base your choice on whether outdoor activities, architectural history or regional produce should shape your stay. Planning can begin with the experiences you’d most like to focus on.
The Krückau hiking trail and paths through green spaces
The Krückau hiking trail passes through Kölln-Reisiek’s green spaces. It follows the Stabeltwiete and Widentwiete routes and meets the Krückau again near the A23 underpass. The named routes and the point where the trail returns to the river provide clear orientation along the route described.
The path is intended primarily for hiking, but cyclists may also use it. Some neighboring areas are floodplains, so wet ground or wet feet are possible. If you’re interested in taking part in summer kayaking activities, the Elmshorn hiking paddlers train on the Krückau as far as Kölln-Reisiek and go kayaking together. Check with the club in advance about participation options.
Herons in local history and the landscape
The heron connects local history and the landscape across two different periods. It has been Kölln-Reisiek’s heraldic animal since 1982. A large colony lived in the Köllner Wried at the beginning of the 20th century; the Krückau lowlands are an important source of food for herons. The dates therefore distinguish between the former colony and the lowlands’ importance as a feeding area.
Historic farm architecture at Dorfstraße 3
The historic farm at Dorfstraße 3 is characterized by two large thatched buildings. The main house is a traditional timber-frame hall house with 13 bays. The same farm complex also includes a three-aisled barn with eight bays. The building styles and different numbers of bays give the complex a distinctive architectural profile and set it apart from the landscape of paths and river.
The completed restoration is also part of the farm’s history: it secured the foundation, repaired or replaced structural elements and plank cladding, and renewed the roof. The documented preservation work thus covered both the building’s foundations and parts of its exterior.
Vegetables and strawberries at Köllner Hof
Köllner Hof grows fresh vegetables and strawberries to organic standards. The farm has followed Bioland guidelines since 1989. Its offerings include a farm box filled with its own freshly harvested vegetables. The selection changes weekly and depends on the season. If regional produce is part of your travel plans, this is a specific option to consider; if you’re interested, check in advance to find out what’s currently available.
