Holm brings together nature and vivid local history. Holmer Sandberge and Buttermoor represent dune and moorland habitats; the Holm local history museum showcases traditional crafts, school life, and farming in times gone by.

Dunes, Heathland, and Moorland

The Holmer Sandberge and Buttermoor FFH area covers 231 hectares and includes a dune area and a complex of moorland habitats. The landscape of Holmer Sandberge includes grassland, sandy heathland, dry grassland, and wooded slopes with oaks, silver birches, and pines. The protected area is also home to sandy heaths, open dune grassland, and dry and wet heathland. This creates a landscape where open areas sit alongside wooded slopes and varied heathland habitats.

Buttermoor contains transitional mires and raised bogs that are capable of natural regeneration. The moor provides a habitat for endangered amphibian, reptile, dragonfly, and bat species. A shallow body of water in the center of Holmer Sandberge is a habitat for amphibians, reptiles, and waterbirds. These different habitats give the natural landscape several facets; the animal groups mentioned are part of its distinctive ecological character.

Trails and Routes in the Surrounding Region

Holmer Sandberge can be explored on signposted trails. Three designated circular trails, each just under nine kilometers long, lead through the Holmer Sandberge and Buttermoor area. For a different tour length, there is a regional circular route of about 18 kilometers through Waldenau, Klövensteen, Buttermoor, and Holmer Sandberge. The approximate length and the places named can help you plan different hikes. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Cyclists can also explore the region: the Wedeler-Au cycling region offers six themed routes and lists Holmer Sandberge as a destination. If you are planning a cycling trip, check the latest route information. Hiking and cycling offer different ways to plan a trip; the circular trails through the area and the regional themed routes each provide their own ways to discover the landscape.

Local History at the Museum

The Holm local history museum is housed in a restored old barn. Historical objects are displayed on two floors, including a shoemaker’s workshop, an old kitchen, and historic school furniture. Peat extraction is also one of the exhibition topics in the main building. The attached cart shed shows how farming used to be done in Holm. Together, the exhibits offer insight into different aspects of everyday life in the past.

Personalized guided tours are available on request. If you would like to arrange a tour, coordinate your preferred date with the museum in advance. Another piece of local history can be found in Holm’s coat of arms: it recalls a Bronze Age arm ring from a hoard discovered in the municipality. The exhibits of tools and everyday objects thus lead to an archaeological find commemorated in the municipality’s coat of arms.
