Schierensee: Lake Landscape and Estate History
Accommodation in Schierensee
Schierensee lies in Westensee Nature Park, and its landscape is shaped by Großes and Kleines Schierensee lakes. Lakes, walking paths and the history of Schierensee Estate give the village its varied character. When planning your trip, you can focus on the paths and natural surroundings or arrange a visit to the manor house in advance.
Lakes and Nature in Westensee Nature Park
Nearby, the Unterer Schierenseebach stream connects Kleiner Schierensee with the lower-lying Westensee. For anyone interested in bodies of water, this is a direct connection between the lakes. More than 500 invertebrate species have been recorded in the stream, including the rare freshwater pearl mussel and mayflies, which depend on clean, oxygen-rich water.
The nearby Ahrensee and Northeastern Westensee Nature Reserve is also part of this landscape. It protects a representative, largely intact complex of lakes and flowing waters in Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape. This means that, alongside the two Schierensee lakes, flowing waters and their biodiversity are also part of the picture.
Walks and Hiking Trails
Schierensee has walking paths and a bathing area at Am Heidberg 1a. The local paths are not marked, so make sure you can navigate well before setting out. Five suggested walks vary in length: the village loop is 1.5 km, the estate loop 2.5 km, the route via Marienberg 3.5 km, the lake loop 5.4 km and the large lake loop 8.4 km.
The options range from the shortest, the village loop, to the longest route listed, the large lake loop. If you are planning a longer hike, the Nature Park Hiking Trail runs for around 35 km through Westensee Nature Park. This is a regional route, on a different scale from the walks in Schierensee.
Westensee Nature Park also has 17 circular hiking trails. Routes 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 17 can be downloaded to a navigation device or a smartphone navigation app. As digital availability may change, it is best to check this option before your tour.
Schierensee Estate and Its History
The history of the village and estate includes several milestones. In 1470, the village of Schierensee was sold to Bordesholm Monastery. Later, Caspar von Saldern had the manor house at Schierensee Estate built. Between 1776 and 1782, it was expanded with Baroque and Neoclassical decorative features as well as a landscaped garden. Caspar von Saldern died at Schierensee Estate in 1786.
The expansion brings together different design elements and a landscaped garden, giving the manor house its own historical and architectural character. Visits to the manor house are possible by prior arrangement with the estate administration. If you would like to plan a visit, make sure to include the necessary arrangements in your trip plans.
Café at the Bathing Area
Café am See 17 is located at the bathing area in Schierensee. Cakes, tarts, burgers and fries are freshly prepared there, and the café also values organic and regional products. Check whether the café will be open on your travel dates before visiting. Its offerings may also change.
Find Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans
When looking for accommodation in Schierensee, you can first decide what you want your days to focus on: the different walking distances, the lake landscape or a visit to the manor house by prior arrangement. This way, your search can reflect the experiences that matter to you. If you plan to visit the estate, remember to include arrangements with the estate administration in your plans.
