The lake, covering around 700 hectares, and the protected historic village centre give Westensee several different sides. You can focus your stay on the water and nature, or include the history of the church and village. This offers different travel ideas side by side: outdoor activities and a cultural focus.

Discover the Lake and Landscape

The Westensee Tour loops around the lake through wooded and open terrain. A shorter route along the shore is about 21 kilometres long. This gives you different options for planning: a loop through varied landscapes and a shorter stretch along the shore. The lake is designated as a European Natura 2000 Special Area of Conservation (SAC); its eastern section and the Eider inflow also have additional designations for bird and nature conservation. The conservation designation therefore covers the entire lake, while the additional designations apply to specific areas.

Activities by the Shore and Along the Way

At Westensee, you can swim, go boating or canoeing, or fish. There is a reservable barbecue area near the bathing spot; the Westensee inn on the lakeshore offers a place to stop and enjoy the view. This lets you combine different priorities: time by the water, an activity on the lake, fishing or a break on the shore. Before you arrive, check the access and usage conditions for the lakeside facilities and confirm your barbecue-area reservation.

The car park on the Westensee shore is a convenient starting point for cycle tours around the Eiderring Canal and Westensee. From there, you can also walk to the TĂĽteberg viewpoint. The two options offer different experiences: a cycling loop and a walk to a named viewpoint. If you like to plan your day around specific destinations, TĂĽteberg provides a clear point of reference.

St. Catharinen and the Village History

Westensee’s protected historic village centre is dominated by the medieval St. Catharinen Church. The church was founded as a branch of Neumünster Monastery. Its fieldstone nave dates from the 13th century; around 1300, the Gothic brick chancel was added. The fieldstone and brick make it possible to trace two construction phases in a single building. The church preserves historic artworks and the tomb of the Danish commander Daniel Rantzau.

Church tours are available by prior arrangement; please schedule an appointment in advance. If you would like to include architectural and local history in your trip alongside the lake and trails, the church offers a distinct cultural focus.

Westensee in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde Travel Region

The wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde travel region has four nature parks in the district. The district’s signposted cycle network also extends for 1,000 kilometres. This is a broader regional context than the individual options in Westensee: the lake, shore and village centre shape the choice of places to visit here, while the figures describe nature and cycling at district level.

When looking for accommodation, you can first consider the scope of your trip: should Westensee, with its lakeside and village attractions, be the main focus, or would you like to include Rendsburg-Eckernförde as a broader framework for your plans? This helps you choose between a focused stay in one place and a wider regional trip.
