Accommodation in Schönwohld
Schönwohld combines nature with local history. At Hansdorfer See, the focus is on the landscape shaped by silting; a protected yew, the Griesenbötel inn and a school chronicle each add their own historical touches. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether landscapes, history or walking and cycling routes are especially important to you.
Hansdorfer See and protected landscapes
Hansdorfer See lies east of district road 32 near Schönwohld. It is shallow, heavily silted up and eutrophic. Reeds, willow scrub and alder carr are typical features of its silting vegetation. There is also a pronounced, almost continuous silting belt; other disturbances are assessed as moderate. Thus, the nature theme around the lake is shaped not only by the water itself, but also by its vegetation and the transition to the shore.
Schönwohld borders more or less directly on the “Upper Eider area including lakes” FFH site. It covers the valley of the Hansdorfer Aue from its confluence with the Eider to district road 32 near Schönwohld.
Local history and notable landmarks
The Schönwohld school chronicle covers the years 1882 to 1960. Teacher Sievert Holling began it in 1882. It therefore provides a specific timeframe for local school and village history. The 180-page chronicle costs 10 euros. If you are considering getting a copy, ask at schulchronik@achterwehr.de about current availability. This lets you check in advance whether the chronicle is available for your visit or for learning about the area’s history.
A yew tree is another notable feature of natural and heritage protection. It stands in the triangular area formed by K 93, “Am Griesenbötel” and “Ins Fegefeuer” in Schönwohld, and is protected under Section 15b of the LNatSchG. A municipal planning document from 2003 described it as about 120 years old; at the time, its trunk diameter was given as around 80 cm and its crown diameter as about 8 m. These historical measurements and age estimates give a sense of the protected tree at that point in time. The Griesenbötel inn is also designated a cultural monument, making a named building part of the local heritage-protection picture as well.
Routes and getting around the municipality
Outside the built-up area, a shared footpath and cycle path runs along Rendsburger Landstraße between Achterwehr and Schönwohld. The municipality’s 2024 climate protection plan rates it as very well developed. For travellers who are considering walking or cycling routes, this is a specific indication of the infrastructure between the two places.
Schönwohld is a district of the municipality of Achterwehr, which lies west of Kiel. Large parts of the municipality are in landscape or nature conservation areas and belong to Westensee Nature Park. The municipality also has a public bathing area at Ahrensee.
This way, you can tailor your search to your planned stay, without assuming that any one focus will matter to every traveller.
