Mittelangeln: Nature Trails and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Mittelangeln
In Mittelangeln, historic traces and experiences in nature come together on different scales. The Historic Satrup Circular Trail offers impressions of the centre of Mittelangeln at eleven stops; trails through moorland and forest turn your attention to the landscape and nature. Other highlights include the Satruphuus, with its economic and local history, the Late Romanesque St. Laurentius Church, and Satrup outdoor swimming pool. This variety offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore history through buildings and exhibitions, or focus your stay more on walking and hiking routes.
Between Circular Trails and Moorland
The Historic Satrup Circular Trail takes about 45 minutes on foot. Its eleven stops focus on historical impressions from the centre of Mittelangeln. The car park at the ADS Kindergarten, Flensburgerstraße 6a, is suggested as a possible starting point. The approximate duration and specific starting point help you fit the route into your day’s plans.
In Rehberg Forest, extensive walking trails offer a chance to relax in nature. Choose between a short 1.6-kilometre circular route and a longer one of 3.25 kilometres. The longer route includes outdoor fitness stations. You can weigh up the distance based on these two specific lengths; only the longer option includes the fitness stations.
Along the Satrupholmer Moor Trail, information boards introduce the flora and fauna of the moor. The 34-hectare Hechtmoor was designated a nature reserve in 1941. Hiking and walking trails run through the forest around Rehbergholz and Schwennholz. The Rehbergholz and Schwennholz protected area also contains six megalithic tombs. Information about the area’s plant and animal life thus sits alongside archaeological traces as different starting points for your explorations.
Buildings and Historic Traces
The Satruphuus Museum is housed in a former shop dating from 1846. Its three floors present local topics relating to trade, crafts and industry, as well as the Redlefsen company, Satrup’s railway stations and historical working methods. This brings together economic, transport and working history, while the former shop itself provides the historical setting.
The Late Romanesque St. Laurentius Church in Satrup was built around 1200. Embedded in the church is a knight’s image, believed to be the oldest in Schleswig-Holstein. A barely visible mound by the Mühlenstrom once housed a medieval motte. These traces differ in how visible they are: the church is a building with an image embedded in it, while the mound by the Mühlenstrom is barely noticeable.
Another Highlight: Satrup Outdoor Swimming Pool
Satrup outdoor swimming pool has four different pools. The swimming pool has five lanes, each 25 metres long. These specific swimming options complement the themes of outdoor activity and local history.
A Broader Historical Perspective
In the wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, history takes on a broader scale: Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart remain today. This offers a different perspective from the eleven stops on the Satrup Circular Trail: there, you encounter history on a short walk; here, as an extensive cultural heritage site.
If exact trail lengths, the suggested starting point, fitness stations, information boards or the pool configuration are important to your plans, check the latest local information before your visit.
