Süderfahrenstedt on Langsee: Walking Routes and Landscapes
Accommodation in Süderfahrenstedt
Langsee defines Süderfahrenstedt: the lake covers around 1.3 km² and has a circumference of about 11.5 km. Almost completely surrounded by woodland, the lake lies in a valley shaped by the last Ice Age. Water, wooded shores and the shape of the valley give the landscape its distinctive character. Two circular routes start at the Landgasthof Zum Langsee and offer different ways to spend a day outdoors.
Circular routes of different lengths
The Langsee Circuit is a short walk of 5.45 km and takes approximately one to one and a half hours. Its first section follows the lakeshore. From there, you can look out over the water, which is bordered by woodland and meadows; the route then continues through the peaceful surroundings. At about 9 km, the western circuit is the longer of the two. Stops along the way include a bathing spot, places to rest, a barbecue shelter, the former home of landscape painter Jan Laß, Lüngmoor and a pond with water lilies.
You can choose a route to suit your plans for the day: the Langsee Circuit combines an approximate walking time with lakeside views and a route through the tranquil landscape. The western circuit covers more distance and passes several different stops. Both start at the same inn, but differ in how far you want to walk and which sights you would like to include. For families planning days out together, this practical comparison can help you set a suitable pace for your walking day.
Getting there and planning your route
The Langsee Circuit can be reached by public transport or by car. The public transport stop is called Süderfahrenstedt Ortsmitte. Services and stop arrangements may change; check current travel information before setting out. Routes may also change, so it is a good idea to check local path conditions before your walk.
More to explore in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination also offers a variety of themes to explore when planning a trip. In Schlei Nature Park, the landscape is shaped by rolling hills, forests, hedgerows, fields of rapeseed and grain, sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish waters provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Guided nature tours are offered in the nature park; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycle routes also lead through the landscape. Another activity is the 25 km SchleiUferTörn, a circular cycling tour around the central part of the Schlei that starts in Arnis.
Holnis and Geltinger Birk are also among Schleswig-Flensburg’s nature attractions. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. The peninsula is the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape. Geltinger Birk covers 773 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Flensburg district; it has well-maintained paths and guided walks that offer insights into its flora and fauna. Alongside walks around Langsee, the wider destination therefore offers other nature and outdoor activities with a different character.
History is another part of the region’s attractions: Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart remain today. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. These places and themes complement Langsee’s focus on nature with a cultural perspective on the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination.
