Discover Nehms: Lakes, circular trail and Hohlegruft Farm
Accommodation in Nehms
Nehms offers a range of ways to enjoy your holiday: Lake Nehmser See is a focus for swimming and a lakeside section of the Landpartie 1 route; around Lake Muggesfelder See, a circular trail passes through moorland, lakeshore and woodland. Hohlegruft Farm offers a different kind of experience, with its farm shop and on-site bakery. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether swimming, cycling, walking or a farm visit will shape your stay. Then check which location suits your plans.
Lakes with different characteristics
The two lakes also differ in size. Lake Nehmser See covers 23 hectares and is very shallow, with an average depth of 2.20 metres. Lake Muggesfelder See covers 27.1 hectares, has an average depth of 9.6 metres and reaches 20.7 metres at its deepest point. Lake Nehmser See is a ribbon lake from the last Ice Age: meltwater accumulated beneath the ice. Finds of flint, millstones and bone remains suggest that people used the surrounding area as a hunting ground during the Neolithic period.
Walking around Lake Muggesfelder See
The circular trail around Lake Muggesfelder See is considered family-friendly; it forms a loop and is signposted. Check the signs on site. At first, it runs along the edge of Muggesfelder Moor, then beside the lake through alder carr woodland. The route continues through mixed woodland dominated by beech and spruce. Moorland, lakeshore and different stretches of woodland make for varied scenery on the walk.
On the southern shore, a bench offers a view of the lake and Muggesfelde Manor. The manor grounds are not accessible from the hiking trail; from the outside, you can look into the courtyard through the main gate. This lets you combine a lakeside break with a view of the manor, without mistaking access to the grounds for a visit inside.
Small details of nature also shape the surroundings: old holly trees grow in a small mixed woodland southeast of Lake Muggesfelder See. Black woodpeckers can be seen in mature red beeches around the lake; stock doves nest in cavities made by the woodpeckers. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.
Cycling and swimming at Lake Nehmser See
The regional Landpartie 1 circular route covers approximately 30 kilometres through Nehms and the foothills of Holstein Switzerland. Its section at Lake Nehmser See follows the lakeshore. The bathing area there has a sunbathing lawn, a jetty and a public toilet. The bathing spot also makes the lake a place to stop for anyone who wants to combine a cycling tour with time by the water.
Hohlegruft Farm: bakery and regional produce
Hohlegruft Farm has operated an organic farm shop since 2002. Its bread, rolls and cakes come from the on-site bakery. The range includes fruit spreads and elderflower syrup, made predominantly from fruit grown on the farm, as well as pork and sausages from Angeln Saddleback pigs. The farm shop also stocks around 70 types of cheese and about 60 types of fruit and vegetables, mostly from the region. The selection may change; check before visiting to see whether the products you want are available.
During regular opening hours, visitors can stroll around the farm, pet the animals and enjoy coffee or tea. Hohlegruft Farm is recognised as a farm animal ark and supports the preservation of endangered livestock breeds by continuing to keep them. If you plan to visit the farm shop, meet the animals or take a break with coffee or tea, check the current opening hours in advance.
Traces of the manor’s history
The gatehouse at Muggesfelde Manor dates from the mid-17th century. Originally, it served as a riding stable and riding arena. This tangible piece of the manor’s history adds to the nature and farm experiences that can appeal to different interests during a stay in Nehms.
