Wahlstedt: Nature and Arsenal History
Accommodation in Wahlstedt
Wahlstedt lies right next to Segeberger Forest. At the same time, the history of the naval artillery arsenal, the local history and crafts museum, and waterside leisure activities give the town additional appeal. You can choose different ways to spend your time: exploring outdoors, visiting historical exhibitions, getting to know animals, or spending time by the water. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first consider which of these interests you want to shape your days.
Forest, Cycling and Hiking Routes
Segeberger Forest is Schleswig-Holstein’s second-largest contiguous woodland. There are numerous cycle routes around Wahlstedt, suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike. Signposted hiking routes offer another way to explore the area. This gives you two different ways to get around: a bike ride or a hike on foot.
The Mönchsweg also gives cyclists a regional point of reference: the route passes through Wahlstedt on the Trappenkamp–Wahlstedt–Bad Segeberg section. A cycling map covers routes around the town and in the neighboring region. It is available at Wahlstedt Town Hall, the Bad Segeberg Tourist Information Office, and Trappenkamp Town Hall. Before setting out, check whether the map is available at your chosen outlet; conditions on the routes can also change.
Following the Trail of the Naval Artillery Arsenal
The naval artillery arsenal history trail is about three kilometers long and has twelve information stations. It is open to the public. The Information and Documentation Center for the Wahlstedt Naval Artillery Arsenal is located in the arsenal’s former waterworks bunker. It has several permanent exhibitions covering around 200 square meters; their content may change over time. A visit to the center must be booked in advance through VHS Wahlstedt. The trail and the center therefore have different access requirements: check access to the trail before your visit and register for the center.
The planned route to the documentation center is to take the RB 82 to Wahlstedt station; from there, it is about a 15-minute walk. Check the latest train connections in advance. The approximate walking time and the advance booking requirement are especially useful to know when planning your visit as part of a day trip.
Village Life, Crafts and Quiet Places
The local history and crafts museum explores village life and old workshops from 1850 to 1930. A model of the naval arsenal is used there to explain Wahlstedt’s early industrial development. The museum thus brings together everyday and crafts history with a model illustrating another chapter in the town’s history.
The Christus-Kirche offers a different way to pause: it has a Bible garden and a memorial where visitors can spend some time. This complements museum visits with a place to take a break. Visitors interested in history can choose between exhibitions on specific topics and a quieter visit to the Bible garden or memorial.
Animals and Water Activities
Kleine Arche Wahlstedt is a visitor sanctuary for rare or endangered domestic animal breeds. Signs along an educational trail explain the animals you can see there. This makes wildlife and learning about animals a focus alongside exhibitions on the town’s history. The animals kept there and visitor arrangements may change; check the current options before your visit.
Aqua Fun offers a six-meter-long water climbing wall with a climbing height of four meters, as well as a large water slide and a baby pool at the outdoor pool. The facilities may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out. Aqua Fun also has a motorhome parking area available year-round; check its operating status in advance.
