Kollmar lies on the Elbe in the Kollmar Marsh, a protected landscape area. Agriculture, historic farmsteads, harbors and beaches shape the village. These different aspects offer several starting points for planning a trip: the riverbank and marshland, trails, the beach and local cultural history.

Experience the Elbe Riverbank and Marshland

The Elbe floodplain and the riverbank within the protected area provide breeding, resting and feeding grounds for numerous waterbird species. Birdlife is therefore one of the landscape’s distinctive natural features. If you would like to explore Kollmar on foot, you can take a walk of about five kilometers from the harbor to the mouth of the Krückau and back. The route follows the Elbe floodplain through reeds, tidal creeks, ponds and mudflats. Watch out for the incoming tide.

A cycling loop also starts at Kollmar Harbor: it follows the Elbe toward Bielenberg and then continues through the marsh. Quiet farm tracks, drainage ditches, meadows and historic dike lines shape the route. Another loop is the 22-kilometer Obsttörn through the fruit-growing area between Kollmar and Neuendorf. For comparison, the walk to the mouth of the Krückau and back is about five kilometers, while the Obsttörn is 22 kilometers. This gives you a sense of the different distances to consider when planning.

Beach and Playground at the Harbor

In summer, the sandy beach at Kollmar Harbor is a place to relax, sunbathe and cool off in the water. Whether swimming is suitable depends on the time of year and local conditions. The harbor playground lies between the sandy beach and the dike. It has a pirate ship with a viewing tower. The beach and playground offer a different kind of outing from the longer routes through the floodplain and marsh.

Cultural History in Kollmar

Kollmar Church was built in 1448. The Dörpstuuv exhibition, “Storm Surges and Coastal Protection,” explores the development of the Kollmar Marsh, dike construction, coastal protection and major storm surges. Information panels and pictures guide visitors through these topics. The Dörpstuuv also displays objects found in the Elbe from different periods: Stone Age relics, medieval jewelry, early modern cannonballs and later items from ship galleys.

The exhibition is open from May to September on the first and third Sunday of each month, from 2 to 5 p.m.; additional appointments can be arranged. Check the opening arrangements before your visit. The rose garden on the Elbe offers something different: neither chemical sprays nor plant protection products are used there.

Practical Information

For walks in Kollmar, the Neuer Weg parking lot is considered the best place to park. Since parking arrangements can change, check the situation before your visit. Bielenberg Harbor offers moorings for sailors and motorboat users. Check local availability before you travel.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: Would you mainly like to spend time by the water, explore routes through the marsh or plan cultural visits? Check the location of your accommodation against the places you intend to visit. This will help you choose a starting point that suits your daily plans.
