Discover Brunsbek: Nature and Railway History
Accommodation in Brunsbek
Brunsbek offers several starting points for an exploration: a nature reserve, a cycling route along a former railway line, church architecture and history, and farm offerings. Depending on whether you focus on nature, traces of history or regional food, your stay will have a different emphasis.
Nature around Papendorf
The “Corbek, Brunsteichbach and Brunsbach” landscape conservation area also includes land in Brunsbek. East of Papendorf, deciduous woodland and grassland are part of the protected area. Its conservation objectives include recreation that is compatible with nature, through experiencing and enjoying nature and the landscape. This brings together distinctive landscape features and the opportunity to take in nature and the landscape mindfully.
Cycling along historic routes
Route C passes through Papendorf and Langelohe and follows the former track of the Südstormarn District Railway. The railway opened in 1907 and closed in 1952. On a route through the two districts, you will encounter a visible link between today’s cycling tour and the former railway line. The Stormarnsches Village Museum is also one of the highlights along Route C; check visiting arrangements before you go.
For orientation, Route C has local signposts and nine information boards, including boards in Papendorf and Langelohe. As signs and boards may change, check their current status before your ride. One section in Papendorf also has a history of its own: in 2019, a roughly two-kilometre stretch of cycle path between the area south of Papendorf and State Road 92 was resurfaced and widened to 2.50 metres. If the current condition is important to your plans, check it before setting off.
The wider Stormarn travel destination offers another perspective on cycling: it has more than 50 kilometres of well-maintained paths along three disused railway lines, with information boards about railway history. This regional offering complements the focus on Route C with a broader choice of routes connected to the area’s railway past.
Church history and regional offerings
The Brunsbek districts of Papendorf, Langelohe and Kronshorst belong to the Siek parish. Traces of around 800 years of architectural history can be discovered at Siek Peace Church. A notable historical detail is the bronze baptismal font dating from the mid-14th century. Those interested in architectural history will find a different way to explore the past here than along the former railway line.
The farm offerings also have their own appeal. Fischer's milk vending station in Langelohe offers fresh milk to dispense around the clock, seven days a week. Check availability before planning your day around it. Kronshorster Lindenhof offers smoked fish monthly, as well as bread rolls, bread and cakes on Saturdays. The farm shop stocks meat, sausages, fresh eggs, yoghurt, cheese and seasonal vegetables. Offerings and products may change; check in advance if needed.
