Kyffhäuserland offers surprising contrasts: in Bendeleben, a village church with traces reaching far back in time stands alongside a landscaped castle park, while Filsberg adds a distinctive note to the scenery with its limestone flora. The Barbarossa Cave, between Rottleben and Steinthaleben, is another highlight. The area's different places and themes give your trip a cultural and scenic focus.

Church and castle park in Bendeleben

The village church of St. Pankratius was rebuilt in 1588 under the patronage of Hermann von Bendeleben. At the southern entrance portal, the weathered masonry in the Old Romanesque style dates back at least to the 12th century. Different layers of history are therefore closely connected in this one building: the late 16th-century reconstruction and the much older traces at the portal. If you are interested in architectural history, this contrast in dates is a particularly fascinating starting point.

The old castle in Bendeleben is surrounded by a 21-hectare park. It was laid out in the English style with Baroque elements. The spring area and existing trees were used to create winding paths and sightlines. The park's design thus combines a spacious layout with carefully positioned views. Together with the church, Bendeleben showcases two distinct forms of historic design: architecture and the creation of a park landscape.

Filsberg and the Barbarossa Cave

Filsberg, which rises in the eastern part of the Hainleite, towers 136 metres above the valley floor. Rare limestone flora grows on the mountain. Its elevation and distinctive plant life give the landscape a character of its own, so Filsberg is more than just a scenic backdrop: its natural features are also part of what makes the place unique.

The Barbarossa Cave, an anhydrite cave between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben, offers a geological contrast. Together with Filsberg and the park in Bendeleben, it brings different themes together: rocks and plant life, an underground formation, and deliberately designed paths and sightlines. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on nature, architecture or a combination of the two.

More things to do in the Kyffhäuser district

The wider destination of the Kyffhäuser district includes other places, each with its own distinctive focus. The Barbarossa Cave was discovered in 1865 by five miners in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. It was named after the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa's return. The Sondershausen Adventure Mine offers a different experience: guided tours take place year-round at a depth of 670 metres, including an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The Adventure Mine also has a concert hall where concerts and cabaret performances are held regularly.

Above ground, too, the options range from cultural history to unusual collections. Since 1923, the Sondershausen Palace Museum has been housed in the former residence of the Counts and Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, where it presents a varied exhibition across three floors. In Westgreußen, the Funkenburg Archaeological Open-Air Museum features Germany's only reconstruction of a Germanic settlement on a distinctive hill spur above the Helbetal valley. Its educational activities include pottery, baking, wool processing, making fishing nets and archery. The Wiehe Model Railway, meanwhile, is an exhibition open year-round and covering 12,000 square metres.

If you would prefer to include a hike in your travel plans, the Kyffhäuser Trail offers another option: the 37-kilometre circular route starts and ends in Bad Frankenhausen. Its three stages lead from there to the Barbarossa Cave, then to the Kyffhäuser Monument and back to Bad Frankenhausen. The trail has been certified as a Quality Trail by Wanderbares Deutschland, is well signposted and is regularly checked for defects. This clearly structured hiking route complements the wide range of cultural attractions and exhibitions.

Accommodation and other destinations

When looking for accommodation in Kyffhäuserland, it is worth deciding first what you would most like to focus on: do you mainly want to visit the church, castle park, Filsberg and the Barbarossa Cave, or would you also like to include other destinations in the wider Kyffhäuser district in your plans? This distinction helps you shape your trip around your interests instead of trying to fit every option into a single itinerary.
