Bleicherode: Discover Church Art and Half-Timbered Houses
Accommodation in Bleicherode
Bleicherode reveals itself through artistic and architectural details: at the Church of Beatae Mariae Virginis, a biblical image and the history of an organ take center stage; the Old Chancellery combines half-timbered architecture with cultural uses. The Nordhausen destination also offers its own nature, mining, and cultural themes.
Church of Beatae Mariae Virginis: Image and Organ
In a wall niche above the entrance to the sacristy is the statue “Jacob Wrestling with the Angel,” created around 1710. It depicts a scene from Genesis 32:25–27. The biblical reference anchors the work in a specific story and gives its title a concrete context.
In the western part of the church, organ builder Robert Knauf created the organ. An extensive restoration brought the instrument back to its original 1898 condition in 2013. The statue draws attention to a single biblical subject; the organ, with its restoration history, offers a second, musical perspective.
The Old Chancellery: Half-Timbering and Present-Day Uses
The Old Chancellery comprises a large half-timbered barn with living quarters and a coach house. Together, they bound the courtyard on its west and north sides. Today, the Old Chancellery houses the town library, a music school, and an exhibition on the history of Bleicherode’s Jewish community. The ensemble’s architecture and its various cultural uses thus coexist in the same place. If you would like to visit any of the facilities, check access in advance.
In the Nordhausen Destination: Karst and Regional History
The Karst Hiking Trail crosses the district of Nordhausen for 56 kilometers from east to west. Part of this trail, the Fire Salamander Trail runs below and over the MĂĽhlberg in the nature reserve, through a gypsum karst uvala, and past sinkholes, spoil heaps, caves, and traces of history. While the Karst Hiking Trail traverses the district along its full length, the Fire Salamander Trail focuses on specific karst formations and traces. The South Harz Nature Park Information Center complements this theme with an interactive exhibition on the gypsum karst landscape and the distinctive features of the South Harz.
The Rabenstein Mine is another experience in the Nordhausen destination. It is the only visitor mine for hard coal in Central Germany. A guided tour explores the nearly 300-year history of hard-coal mining in the Harz and passes the last remaining pieces of coal, fossils, authentic workplaces, and mined-out seams. The “Rabenstein Express” mine train first travels 500 meters into the mountain; the route then continues into 18th-century mining areas. Some mine passages are often only 60 centimeters high. Check the current tour arrangements before your visit. The Ilfeld Local History Museum vividly presents the history of Ilfeld and Wiegersdorf, adding a distinct perspective on mining history.
Food and Seasonal Experiences in Nordhausen
The “From Grain to Grain” tour at the Echter Nordhäuser Traditional Distillery takes you through the historic complex: from the mill room through the distillery, spirits storehouse, office, and barrel cellar to the Henriette Bar. There, visitors can sample the distillery’s own premium spirits and liqueurs. Availability depends on the date, so check the schedule when planning your visit.
The Hohnstein Castle Inn serves upscale traditional German cuisine and regional specialties amid the historic ruins of Hohnstein Castle. From its terrace, you can look out over Neustadt and the South Harz. Check current opening status before visiting the restaurant. For seasonal swimming, Neustadt Forest Pool offers a water slide, paddling pool, a diving facility with 1- and 3-meter boards, a playground, and soccer, volleyball, and table tennis courts. Check current opening status and facilities in advance. In Harztor, the “Harztor Hiking Kids” are another activity for children; program details may vary, so check the current offer.
Take the location of each place into account when choosing your base.
