Discover Großerlach: Hiking Trails and Limes History
Accommodation in Großerlach
Großerlach combines hikes through varied landscapes with Limes history and seasonal winter activities. If you are looking for accommodation, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on: circular trails and views from the heights, Roman history, or skiing and tobogganing offer different ways to shape your trip. This lets you tailor your search to the experiences that matter for your stay.
Hiking through varied landscapes
Großerlach highlights hiking in the Magisches Dreieck (Magic Triangle). Its landscape includes plateaus, highlands and valleys, offering a variety of impressions along the way. The Magisches Dreieck’s joint hiking map lists four circular trails in the Großerlach area, as well as two additional newly designed circular trails. Route listings may change in future editions of the map, so check the edition you are using when planning. The map provides a practical basis for choosing between several circular trails.
Limes history at Heidenbuckel
On Heidenbuckel, south of Grab, stands a fully restored stone Limes tower that visitors can enter. Heidenbuckel is 536 metres above sea level and is one of the highest watchtower sites along the Limes. The 28-kilometre Limes educational trail runs between the reconstructed watchtower on Heidenbuckel near Großerlach-Grab and Öhringen. Large text and picture panels explain the Roman occupation, soldiers’ lives, buildings and settlements, and the construction and fall of the Limes. There are 18 panels in total. The trail therefore offers more than a view of a single watchtower: its topics range from soldiers’ everyday lives to the history of the frontier fortification.
Views from the heights and seasonal winter activities
Hohe Brach in Großerlach reaches an elevation of 586 metres. From there, the view extends to the Swabian Alb and across the Backnang Basin as far as Stuttgart. The silver mine adds another distinctive feature: around 30 metres of the mine are accessible and lit.
The seasonal winter activities at BikePark Großerlach include two downhill runs, each more than 500 metres long, with a vertical drop of over 60 metres. There is also a toboggan run. A separate snowpark with jumps and rails for experienced freestyle skiers and snowboarders has also been built in the ski area at BikePark. These winter activities can be considered separately from hiking and history destinations when planning your trip.
Exploring the wider Rems-Murr district destination
In the wider Rems-Murr district destination, the seasonal Limesbus Nord, route 372, runs from Murrhardt via Grab and Großerlach to Mainhardt and back, from May until the second-to-last Sunday in October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The bus can carry bicycles and e-bikes in a bike trailer; carriage may be subject to operational conditions. The Limesbus also makes it possible to hike to sites on the UNESCO World Heritage Limes or take part in tours led by Limes-Cicerones. Check the latest service information before travelling.
The 50-kilometre Rems-Murr hiking trail also runs through the Rems-Murr district. It can be hiked in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. The entire route is well served by public transport, so you do not need a car to get there. The trail’s route navigation can be downloaded to a smartphone. As connections may change, check the current public transport links before setting out on your specific hike.
Other cultural activities in the Rems-Murr district offer additional ideas for planning your trip. In Murrhardt, a night watchman tells stories and legends by torchlight; the activity is also suitable for children, who can bring lanterns. Historical tours in Backnang follow in the footsteps of the margraves to St. Pancratius Collegiate Church, which houses the burial place of the Margraves of Baden. Confirm the availability of these activities locally.
This will help you get a sense of Großerlach as a destination and tailor your accommodation search to the stay you have planned.
